When Abu Talib was on his death bed, Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to him and found with him, Abu Jahl and ʿAbdullah bin Abi Umaiya bin Al-Mughira. Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O uncle! Say: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, a sentence with which I will defend you before Allah." On that Abu Jahl and ʿAbdullah bin Abi Umaiya said to Abu Talib, "Will you now leave the religion of ʿAbdul Muttalib?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept on inviting him to say that sentence while the other two kept on repeating their sentence before him till Abu Talib said as the last thing he said to them, "I am on the religion of ʿAbdul Muttalib," and refused to say: None has the right to be worshipped except Allah. On that Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By Allah, I will keep on asking Allah's forgiveness for you unless I am forbidden (by Allah) to do so." So Allah revealed:-- 'It is not fitting for the Prophet ﷺ and those who believe that they should invoke (Allah) for forgiveness for pagans.' (9.113) And then Allah revealed especially about Abu Talib:--'Verily! You (O, Muhammad) guide not whom you like, but Allah guides whom He will.' (28.56)

machine translationIbn ʿAbbās said: {أُولِي الْقُوَّةِ} — a group of men could not lift them. {لَتَنُوءُ} — it weighs down. {فَارِغًا} — empty, except of the remembrance of Mūsā. {الْفَرِحِينَ} — the exultant. {قُصِّيهِ} — follow his trail; and it may also mean to relate a speech, as in {نَحْنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ}. {عَنْ جُنُبٍ} — from a distance; it is the same as from janābah, and also from ijtināb (avoidance). Yabṭishu and yabṭushu (both forms are used). {يَأْتَمِرُونَ} — they consult one another. ʿUdwān, ʿadāʾ and taʿaddī are the same. {آنَسَ} — he saw. Al-jidhwah is a thick piece of wood with no flame in it, whereas the shihāb has a flame. Snakes come in kinds: the jānn, the vipers and the black snakes. {رِدْءًا} — a helper. Ibn ʿAbbās said: {يُصَدِّقُنِي}. And another said: {سَنَشُدُّ} — we will help you. Whenever you strengthen something, you have made an arm (ʿaḍud) for it. Maqbūḥīn — destroyed. {وَصَّلْنَا} — we made it clear and completed it. {يُجْبَى} — is brought. {بَطِرَتْ} — it was arrogantly insolent. {فِي أُمِّهَا رَسُولاً} — the Mother of the Towns is Makkah and what surrounds it. {تُكِنُّ} — it conceals. I made something hidden (aknantu) means I concealed it, and kananttuhu means I concealed it, and I made it manifest. {وَيْكَأَنَّ اللَّهَ} is like "Do you not see that God" — {يَبْسُطُ الرِّزْقَ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيَقْدِرُ}: He gives him abundance and restricts him.
