✧ When Uthman was besieged and his house was surrounded, he looked out over the people and said, 'I adjure you by Allah: do you know that when Hira shook with us, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Be firm, Hira, for upon you are only a prophet, a truthful one, or a martyr"?' They said, 'O Allah, yes.' He said, 'I adjure you by Allah: do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said during the expedition of hardship, "Whoever spends an accepted expenditure"?' The people then were in straitened circumstances and exhausted, and I equipped a third of that army from my own wealth. They said, 'O Allah, yes.' Then he said, 'I adjure you by Allah: do you know that Ruma well was not drunk from except for a price, and I bought it with my own wealth and made it for the rich, the poor, and the wayfarer?' They said, 'O Allah, yes,' among other things he enumerated.

machine translationAbū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī narrated it, and there is disagreement about him. Zayd b. Abī Unaysah, Shuʿbah and ʿAbd al-Kabīr b. Dīnār narrated it from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī. Yūnus b. Abī Isḥāq and Isrāʾīl b. Yūnus differed from them, and narrated it from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. The statement of Shuʿbah and those who followed him is closer to the correct view.
