أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنِ مُجَاشِعٍ حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ حَدَّثَنِي رَبِيعَةُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ قَيْسٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النُّعْمَانَ بْنَ بَشِيرٍ
أَنَّهُ أَرْسَلَهُ مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ بِكِتَابٍ إِلَى عَائِشَةَ فَدَفَعَهُ إِلَيْهَا فَقَالَتْ أَلَا أُحَدِّثُكَ بِحَدِيثٍ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ؟ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَتْ إِنِّي عِنْدَهُ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ أَنَا وَحَفْصَةُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «لَوْ كَانَ عِنْدَنَا رَجُلٌ يُحَدِّثُنَا» فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَبْعَثُ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ يَجِيءُ فَيُحَدِّثُنَا؟ قَالَتْ فَسَكَتَ فَقَالَتْ حَفْصَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَبْعَثُ إِلَى عُمَرَ فَيَجِيءُ فَيُحَدِّثُنَا؟ قَالَتْ فَسَكَتَ ﷺ فَدَعَا رَجُلًا فَأَسَرَّ إِلَيْهِ بِشَيْءٍ دُونَنَا فَذَهَبَ فَجَاءَ عُثْمَانُ فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْهِ بِوَجْهِهِ فَسَمِعْتُهُ ﷺ يَقُولُ «يَا عُثْمَانُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَعَلَّهُ يُقَمِّصُكَ قَمِيصًا فَإِنْ أَرَادُوكَ عَلَى خَلْعِهِ فَلَا تَخْلَعْهُ ثَلَاثًا» قُلْتُ يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَأَيْنَ كُنْتِ عَنْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ؟ قَالَتْ يَا بُنَيَّ أُنْسِيتُهُ كَأَنِّي لَمْ أَسْمَعْهُ قَطُّ

✧ Muawiya b. Abi Sufyan sent him with a letter to Aisha. He gave it to her, and she said, 'Shall I not tell you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' I said, 'Yes.' She said, 'I was with him one day, I and Hafsa, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If only we had a man to talk to us." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, shall I send for Abu Bakr to come and talk to us?" She said, he remained silent. Hafsa said, "O Messenger of Allah, shall I send for Umar to come and talk to us?" She said, he ﷺ remained silent. Then he called a man and whispered something to him apart from us. The man went and brought Uthman. He turned to him and I heard him ﷺ say, "O Uthman, perhaps Allah will clothe you with a shirt. If they want you to take it off, do not take it off"—three times. I said, "O Mother of the Believers, why did you not mention this hadith before?" She said, "O my son, I forgot it, as if I had never heard it."
