✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode a donkey and seated me behind him. Then he said, “O Abu Dharr, do you think that if a severe hunger were to strike the people so that you could not get up from your bed to your mosque, what would you do?” I said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “Maintain chastity.” He said, “O Abu Dharr, do you think that if a severe death were to strike the people so that a house would be had for a slave, what would you do?” I said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “Be patient. O Abu Dharr, do you think that if the people were to kill one another until the stones of Zayt—a place in Madinah—are submerged in blood, what would you do?” I said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “Stay in your house and lock your door.” I said, “What if I am not left alone?” He said, “Then go to those from whom you are, and be among them.” I said, “Should I take up my weapon?” He said, “Then you would share in their sin. But if you fear that the flash of the sword will alarm you, throw the edge of your cloak over your face, and he will bear your sin and his own.”
