✧ When a man would come to Madinah, if he had an acquaintance there, he would stay with his acquaintance. If he had no acquaintance, he would stay in the suffah. I was among those who stayed in the suffah. I shared with a man, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would give us every day a mudd of dates between two men. One day he said the salam at the end of the prayer, and a man among us called out, “O Messenger of Allah, the dates have burned our stomachs.” So the Prophet ﷺ went to his pulpit, ascended, praised Allah, and extolled Him. Then he mentioned what he had encountered from his people, saying, “Until I and my companion remained for over ten days with no food except berir, and berir is the fruit of the arak tree. Then we came to our brothers, the Ansar, and the bulk of their food was dates, and they shared them with us. By Allah, if I could find bread and meat for you, I would feed you, but perhaps you will live to see a time—or whoever of you lives to see it—when they will wear the like of the curtains of the Kaaba and will be served morning and evening with large bowls of food.”
