✧ When death came to Abu Dharr, I wept, and he said, "What makes you weep?" I said, "Why should I not weep, when you are dying in a desolate land, and I have no garment that can serve as your shroud, nor do I have the means to bury you?" He said, "Rejoice and do not weep, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'If two Muslim parents lose two or three children and remain patient and seek reward, they will never see the Fire.' And I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to a group of people, among whom I was one: 'A man among you will surely die in a desolate land, witnessed by a band of believers.' And there was no one from that group except that he died in a village or among a gathering, so I am that man. By Allah, I have not lied, nor have I been lied to. So look out for the road." I said, "How can I, when the pilgrims have gone and the routes are cut off?" He said, "Go and look." She said, "So I would hurry to the mound, look out, then return and nurse him. While he and I were like that, suddenly I saw men on their mounts, like vultures, their riding camels speeding with them." She said, "They hurried to me when they stopped beside me and said, 'O servant of Allah, what is the matter with you?' I said, 'A Muslim man is dying; will you shroud him?' They said, 'Who is he?' I said, 'Abu Dharr.' They said, 'The companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' I said, 'Yes.' Then they ransomed him with their fathers and mothers and hurried to him until they entered upon him. He said to them, 'Rejoice, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to a group of people, among whom I was one: "A man among you will surely die in a desolate land, witnessed by a band of believers." And there was no one from that group except that he died among a gathering. By Allah, I have not lied, nor have I been lied to. If I had a garment that could serve as a shroud for me or for my wife, I would not be shrouded except in a garment that is mine or hers. I adjure you by Allah that no one among you who has been an emir, a tax collector, a courier, or a chief should shroud me.' And there was no one from that group except that he had done some of what he said, except a young man from the Ansar. He said, 'I will shroud you, O uncle. I will shroud you in this cloak of mine and in two garments in my bag woven by my mother.' Abu Dharr said, 'You, then shroud me.' So the Ansari shrouded him among the group who attended, and they stood over him and buried him in a group, all of whom were from Yemen.
