✧ When death approached Abū Dharr, I wept. He said: 'What makes you weep?' I said: 'Why should I not weep while you are dying in a desolate land and I have no garment that would suffice as a shroud for you?' He said: 'Do not weep, and rejoice, for I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say to a group of which I was a member: "A man from among you will surely die in a desolate land, witnessed by a band of believers." And none of that group remains except that he has died in a village among a community, and I am the one who will die in a desolate land. By God, I have not lied nor been lied to. So look out for the road.' She said: 'But how, when the pilgrims have gone and the roads are cut off?' He said: 'Go and keep watch.' She said: I would go to a sand hill and look out, then return to him and nurse him. While I was doing that, I saw men on their mounts as if they were vultures. They approached until they stopped by me and said: 'What is wrong with you, O slave girl of God?' I said: 'A Muslim man is dying; will you shroud him?' They said: 'Who is he?' I said: 'Abū Dharr.' They said: 'The companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ?' I said: 'Yes.' She said: They ransomed him with their fathers and mothers and hurried to him. They entered upon him and he welcomed them and said: 'I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say to a group of which I was a member: "A man from among you will surely die in a desolate land, witnessed by a band of believers." And none of that group remains except that he has died in a village and a community, and I am the one who will die in a desolate land. You hear: If I had a garment that would suffice as a shroud for me or for my wife, I would not be shrouded except in a garment of mine or hers. You hear: I call you to witness that one of you who was a commander or a headman or a courier or a leader should shroud me. And there is no one among the people except that he has been involved in some of that, except a young man from the Anṣār. He said: "O uncle, I will shroud you. I have not committed anything of what you mentioned. I will shroud you in this cloak of mine and in two garments in my bag from my mother's spinning, which she wove for me." So the Anṣārī shrouded him among the group who witnessed it, among them Ḥujr b. al-Adbar and Mālik b. al-Ashtar, in a group all of whom were Yemeni.'
