✧ Umar b. al-Khattab sent for me and said: Some families of your people have arrived in Madinah, and we have ordered a small share for them, so distribute it among them. I said: O Commander of the Believers, order someone else to do that. He said: Take it, O man. While I was in that situation, his freedman Yarfa' came and said: Here are Uthman, Abd al-Rahman b. Awf, Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas, and al-Zubayr b. al-Awwam - and I do not know whether he mentioned Talha or not - asking permission to enter upon you. He said: Give them permission. Then he waited a while, then came and said: Al-Abbas and Ali are asking permission to enter upon you. He said: Give them permission. When al-Abbas entered, he said: O Commander of the Believers, judge between me and this one - at that time they were disputing over what Allah had granted His Messenger as spoils from the wealth of Banu al-Nadir. The people said: Judge between them, O Commander of the Believers, and relieve each of them from the other, for their dispute has gone on too long. Umar said: I adjure you by Allah, by whose permission the heavens and the earth stand, do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "We are not inherited from; what we leave is charity"? They said: He did say that. Then he said to the two of them the same thing, and they said: Yes. He said: I will inform you about this fay'. Allah, mighty and sublime, singled out His Prophet ﷺ with something He did not give to anyone else, as He said: {And what Allah restored to His Messenger from them, you did not spur any horses or camels for it} [Quran 59:6]. So this was exclusively for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. By Allah, he did not keep it from you or hoard it over you; he distributed it among you and spread it among you until what remained of the wealth remained. He would spend on his family for a year - and perhaps Ma'mar said: he would withhold from it the provision of his family for a year - then he would place what remained in the place of Allah's wealth. When Allah took His Messenger ﷺ, Abu Bakr said: I am the one most entitled to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after him; I will act in it as he used to act. Then he turned to Ali and al-Abbas and said: And you two claim that he was unjust and sinful in it, but Allah knows that he was truthful, righteous, and followed the truth. Then I was given charge of it after Abu Bakr for two years of my rule, and I acted in it like the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr acted. And you two claim that I am unjust and sinful in it, while Allah knows that I am truthful, righteous, and follow the truth. Then you came to me - this one, meaning al-Abbas, seeking his inheritance from his nephew, and this one, meaning Ali, asking me for the inheritance of his wife. I said to you both: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "We are not inherited from; what we leave is charity." Then it occurred to me to hand it over to you two, so I took from you both the covenant of Allah and His pledge that you would act in it as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr acted, and as I have acted during my charge. You said: Hand it over to us on that condition. Do you want from me a judgment other than this? By Him by whose permission the heavens and the earth stand, I will not judge between you two in it with any judgment other than this. If you are unable to manage it, then hand it back to me. He said: Then Ali gained control over it, and it was in Ali's hand, then in the hand of Hasan b. Ali, then in the hand of Husayn b. Ali, then in the hand of Ali b. Husayn, then in the hand of Hasan b. Hasan, then in the hand of Zayd b. Hasan. Ma'mar said: Then it was in the hand of Abd Allah b. al-Hasan.
