✧ Fatima bt. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent to Abu Bakr asking for her inheritance from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, from what Allah had granted him as spoils in Madinah, Fadak, and what remained of the fifth of Khaybar. Abu Bakr said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "We are not inherited from; what we leave is charity. The family of Muhammad ﷺ only eats from this wealth." By Allah, I will not change anything of the charity of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the state it was in during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I will act in it as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ acted. Abu Bakr refused to give Fatima anything from it, so Fatima became angry with Abu Bakr over that and shunned him, and did not speak to him until she died six months after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When she died, her husband Ali b. Abi Talib ؓ buried her at night and did not inform Abu Bakr of her death, and he prayed over her. Ali had a certain standing among the people during Fatima's lifetime, but when Fatima died, he noticed the people's faces turning away from him, so he sought reconciliation with Abu Bakr and to pledge allegiance to him, although he had not pledged allegiance during those months. He sent to Abu Bakr: Come to us, but let no one come with you, disliking that Umar b. al-Khattab should be present. Umar b. al-Khattab said to Abu Bakr: By Allah, do not enter upon them alone. Abu Bakr said: What could they possibly do to me? By Allah, I will go to them. So Abu Bakr entered upon them. Ali b. Abi Talib then bore witness and said: We have recognized, O Abu Bakr, your excellence and what Allah has given you, and we do not grudge you any good that Allah has brought to you, but you have acted autocratically toward us in this matter, and we saw that we had a right due to our kinship with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He continued to speak to Abu Bakr until Abu Bakr's eyes overflowed. When Abu Bakr spoke, he said: By Him in whose hand is my soul, kinship with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is more beloved to me than maintaining ties with my own family and kin. As for the dispute between me and you over these properties, I have not fallen short in them regarding what is right, and I have not left anything that I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do with them except that I have done it. Ali b. Abi Talib ؓ said to Abu Bakr: Your appointment is this evening for the pledge of allegiance. When Abu Bakr had prayed the noon prayer, he ascended the pulpit, bore witness, then mentioned the affair of Ali b. Abi Talib and his delay from pledging allegiance and the excuse he had given to him. Then he sought forgiveness. Ali b. Abi Talib bore witness, magnifying the right and sanctity of Abu Bakr, and stating that what he had done was not out of envy of Abu Bakr nor denial of what Allah had favored him with, but we saw that we had a share in this matter, and he acted autocratically toward us, so we felt something in ourselves. The Muslims were pleased with that and said: You have done right. The Muslims became close to Ali once more when he returned to the matter with what is proper.
