- ﷺ
✧ “If you wish, you may rely on that.” He said, “So I went out until I came to my home, and I placed my sword, my quiver, my shield, and my sandals at my head, and I faced the horizon. Whenever I slept for a while, I woke up; when I saw that night was upon me, I slept until the first light of dawn. I wanted to set out when suddenly a man came running, calling, ‘O Bilāl, answer the Messenger of Allah ﷺ!’ So I went until I came to him, and there were four riding camels, kneeling, with their loads on them. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked permission. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, ‘Rejoice, for Allah has brought the means to pay your debt.’ I praised Allah. He said, ‘Did you not pass by the four kneeling camels?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘You have their necks and what is on them: clothing and food. The ruler of Fadak sent them as a gift to me. Take them and pay your debt.’” He said, “So I did. I unloaded their burdens, hobbled them, then went to give the call for the dawn prayer. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had prayed, I went out to al-Baqī‘, put my fingers in my ears, and called out: ‘Whoever is owed a debt by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, let him come.’ I kept selling and paying, and offering and paying, until there remained in my hand two ūqiyyahs or an ūqiyyah and a half. I went to the mosque, and most of the day had passed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting alone in the mosque. I greeted him, and he said, ‘What happened with what you had?’ I said, ‘Allah has paid everything that was owed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; nothing remains.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Is there anything left over?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘See that you relieve me of it.’ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the night prayer, he called me and said, ‘What happened with what you had?’ I said, ‘It is with me; no one has come to me.’ He spent the night in the mosque until morning, and remained in the mosque the second day. At the end of the day, two riders came. I went with them, clothed them and fed them. When he prayed the night prayer, he called me and said ﷺ, ‘What happened with what you had?’ I said, ‘Allah has relieved you of it, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said takbīr and praised Allah, fearing that death would overtake him while he still had it. Then I followed him until he came to his wives, greeting each one, until he reached his sleeping place. This is what you asked me about.”
