✧ We were in a gathering with Ubayy b. Ka'b when Abu Musa al-Ash'ari came with a stick until he stood and said, "I adjure you by Allah, has any of you heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Seeking permission is three times; if permission is granted to you, then enter, otherwise return'?" Ubayy said, "What is that?" He said, "I sought permission upon Umar b. al-Khattab yesterday three times, but permission was not granted to me, so I returned. Then I came to him and entered upon him and told him that I had come yesterday and greeted three times and then left. He said, 'We heard you, and at that time we were busy. If only you had sought permission until permission was granted to you.' I said, 'I sought permission as I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He said, 'By Allah, I will cause your back pain, or you will bring me someone who testifies for you about this.'" Abu Musa said, "Ubayy said, 'By Allah, none will stand with you except the youngest of us in age. Rise, O Abu Sa'id.' So I rose and went to Umar and said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say this.'"
