✧ While a man from the Muslims was that day pursuing a man from the polytheists in front of him, he heard the crack of a whip above him and the voice of a horseman above him saying: 'Advance, Hayzum!' Then he looked at the polytheist in front of him and saw him fall flat on his back. He looked at him and saw that his nose had been struck and his face split, as if by a whip lash, and it had all turned green. The Ansari came and told the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about that. He ﷺ said: 'You spoke the truth. That was from the reinforcement of the third heaven.' They killed seventy that day and took seventy prisoners. Ibn 'Abbas said: When they took the prisoners, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abu Bakr, 'Ali, and 'Umar: 'What do you think about these prisoners?' Abu Bakr said: 'O Prophet of Allah, they are our cousins and kinsmen. I think we should take ransom from them, which will be a strength for us against the disbelievers, and perhaps Allah will guide them to Islam.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'What do you think, O Ibn al-Khattab?' I said: 'No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I do not think as Abu Bakr thinks. But I think you should enable us to strike their necks. Enable 'Ali to deal with 'Aqil and strike his neck, and enable me to deal with so-and-so—a relative of 'Umar—and strike his neck, for these are the leaders of disbelief and its champions.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ inclined to what Abu Bakr said and did not incline to what I said. The next day, I came and found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr sitting and weeping. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, tell me what makes you and your companion weep. If I find cause to weep, I will weep; and if I do not, I will force myself to weep because of your weeping.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'I weep because of what your companions presented to me regarding taking ransom. Allah revealed: "It is not for a prophet to have captives until he has made a great slaughter in the land" up to His saying: "So eat of what you have taken as spoils, lawful and good." Thus Allah made spoils lawful.'
