✧ I witnessed al-Yarmuk, and over it were five commanders: Abu Ubayda b. al-Jarrah, Yazid b. Abi Sufyan, Shurahbil b. Hasana, Khalid b. al-Walid, and Iyad—not the Iyad who is the companion of the hadith that Simak narrates from. Umar, ؓ, said: When there is fighting, Abu Ubayda is in charge of you. He (the narrator) said: So we wrote to him that death has surged upon us and we requested reinforcements. He wrote back: Your letter requesting reinforcements has come to me, and I direct you to what is greater in victory and more fortified in soldiers: Allah. So seek His help, for Muhammad ﷺ was granted victory with fewer than your number. When my letter reaches you, fight them and do not refer back to me. He (the narrator) said: So we fought them, routed them, and killed them for four farsakhs, and we seized wealth. They consulted, and Iyad suggested ten dirhams per head. Abu Ubayda said: Who will race me? A young man said: I will, if you do not get angry. He said: So he beat him, and I saw the two braids of Abu Ubayda bouncing while he was behind him on an Arab horse.
