✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent an commander over an army or an expedition, he would instruct him personally to fear Allah and to treat the Muslims with him well. Then he would say, 'Raid in the name of Allah, in the cause of Allah. Fight those who disbelieve in Allah. Do not steal from the spoils, do not act treacherously, do not mutilate, and do not kill a child. When you meet your enemy among the polytheists, call them to one of three options. Whichever of them they accept, accept from them and refrain from them. Call them to Islam. If they accept that, accept from them and refrain from them. Then call them to move from their land to the land of the emigrants. If they refuse to move, inform them that if they do so, they will be like the Bedouin emigrants: the ruling of Allah that applies to the emigrants will apply to them. If they accept that, accept from them. If they refuse, seek help from Allah against them and then fight them. When you besiege the people of a fortress and they ask you to grant them the covenant of Allah and the covenant of His Messenger, do not grant them the covenant of Allah or the covenant of His Messenger, but grant them your covenant and the covenant of your fathers and the covenant of your companions. For you breaking your covenants and the covenants of your fathers is lighter for you than breaking the covenant of Allah and the covenant of His Messenger ﷺ. When you besiege the people of a fortress and they ask you to bring them down according to the judgment of Allah, do not bring them down according to the judgment of Allah, for you do not know whether you will attain the judgment of Allah regarding them or not.'
