✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent 'Alqamah b. Mujazziz al-Mudliji on an expedition, and I was among them. We set out until when we were at the start of our campaign or on part of the road, a group sought permission from him and he gave them permission, and he appointed over them 'Abd Allah b. Hudhafah al-Sahmi, who was one of the Companions of Badr and had a sense of humor. I was among those who returned with him. While we were on the road, we stopped at a place and the people kindled a fire to warm themselves by it or to prepare something for themselves. Then 'Abd Allah b. Hudhafah said to them: 'Do I not have over you the right of hearing and obedience?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'So I command you to something – will you not do it?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Verily I adjure you by my right and your obedience that you leap into this fire.' He said: Some people stood up until he thought they were about to leap into it. Then he said: 'Restrain yourselves. I was only joking with you.' When they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they mentioned that to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever commands you to disobedience, do not obey him.'
