✧ Al-Zubayr married me while he had no property on earth, no slave, nothing except a camel for drawing water and his horse. I used to feed his horse, take care of its upkeep, groom it, grind date pits for his camel, feed it, draw water, and stitch its leather bucket. Abu Usama said: meaning the bucket. I used to knead dough, but I was not good at baking, so some of my neighbors from the Ansar, who were truthful women, baked for me. I used to carry date pits from the land of al-Zubayr, which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had granted to him, on my head. It was two-thirds of a farsakh away. One day I came with date pits on my head and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met me with a group of his companions. He called me and then said: «Ikh, ikh,» to make me ride behind him. I felt shy to walk with the men, and I remembered al-Zubayr and his jealousy, for he was the most jealous of people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recognized that I felt shy, so he went on. I came to al-Zubayr and said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ met me while I had date pits on my head, and with him was a group of his companions. He made his camel kneel so that I could ride with him, but I felt shy and knew your jealousy. He said: By Allah, your carrying the date pits is more difficult for me than your riding with him. She said: Later Abu Bakr sent me a servant, and that servant took over the care of the horse, as if she had set me free.
