✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ resided in Madinah for nine years without performing ḥajj. Then he announced to the people to set out. When he reached Dhū al-Ḥulayfah, he prayed at Dhū al-Ḥulayfah, and Asmāʾ bt. ʿUmays gave birth to Muḥammad b. Abī Bakr. She sent a message to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Bathe, wrap yourself with a cloth, and assume iḥrām.” He said: “She did so. When the chest of the Messenger of Allah’s ﷺ riding camel settled upon the open desert, he assumed iḥrām and we too assumed iḥrām, knowing nothing but ḥajj—for that we had set out—while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was among us and the Qurʾān was being sent down upon him, and he knew its interpretation, and he only did what he was commanded.” Jābir said: “I looked in front of me, behind me, to my right, and to my left as far as my sight could reach, and the people were on foot and riding. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ began to say the talbiyah: ‘Labbayka allāhumma labbayka, labbayka lā sharīka laka labbayka, inna al-ḥamda wa al-niʿmata laka wa al-mulka lā sharīka laka.’ When we arrived in Makkah, he began by touching the corner, then he hastened in three circuits and walked in four. When he finished his ṭawāf, he went to the Maqām and said: ‘Allah said: “And take the Station of Ibrāhīm as a place of prayer.”’ Then he prayed two rakʿahs behind the Station of Ibrāhīm, then he went to the corner and touched it, then he went to al-Ṣafā and said: ‘We begin with what Allah began with: “Indeed, al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.”’ He climbed al-Ṣafā until the House appeared to him, and he said the takbīr three times and said: ‘There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise; He gives life and death; in His hand is all good, and He has power over all things’ three times. Then he supplicated. Then he descended from al-Ṣafā and walked until, when his feet went down into the bottom of the watercourse, he hastened; then when his feet climbed out of the watercourse, he walked to al-Marwah. He climbed al-Marwah until the House appeared to him, and he said the like of what he had said on al-Ṣafā. He performed seven rounds and said: ‘Whoever does not have a sacrificial animal, let him exit iḥrām; whoever has a sacrificial animal, let him remain in his iḥrām. Were it not that I have a sacrificial animal, I would have exited iḥrām; and had I known beforehand what came later, I would have assumed iḥrām for ʿumrah.’” He said: “ʿAlī arrived from Yemen, and the Prophet ﷺ said to him: ‘With what did you assume iḥrām, O ʿAlī?’ He said: ‘I said: O Allah, I assume iḥrām with what Your Messenger has assumed iḥrām.’ He said: ‘I have a sacrificial animal, so do not exit iḥrām.’” ʿAlī said: “I entered upon Fāṭimah, and she had applied kohl and worn dyed clothes. I said: ‘Who ordered you to do this?’ She said: ‘My father ﷺ ordered me.’” He said: “ʿAlī used to say in Iraq: I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, angry with Fāṭimah, seeking to verify what she had said. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘She has spoken truth; I ordered her.’” He said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ slaughtered one hundred camels; with his own hand he slaughtered sixty-three, and ʿAlī slaughtered the rest. Then he took a piece from each camel and cooked them all together, and they both ate of the meat and drank of the broth. Then Surāqah b. Mālik b. Juʿshum said: ‘Is this for this year of ours or forever?’ He said: ‘No, rather forever; the ʿumrah has entered into the ḥajj.’”
