✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned aside while I was with him during the expedition of Tabuk before dawn, so I turned aside with him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made his camel kneel and went to relieve himself, then came to me. I poured water from the vessel over his hands, and he washed his palms, then washed his face. Then he uncovered his forearms, but the sleeve of his jubba was tight, so he inserted his hands and brought them out from beneath the jubba and washed them up to the elbows. He wiped his head, then performed wiping over his leather socks. Then he mounted, and we set off until we came upon the people at prayer. They had put forward 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf, and he led them in prayer when the time of prayer arrived. We found that 'Abd al-Rahman had already led them in one rak'ah of the dawn prayer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood with the Muslims behind 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf and prayed the second rak'ah of the dawn prayer. Then 'Abd al-Rahman said the salutation, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up to complete his prayer. The Muslims were startled and uttered much tasbih because they had preceded the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished with the salutation, he said to them, "You have done well," or "You have done right."
