News of Nahāwand and Ibn Muqarrin was slow in reaching ʿUmar, and he was seeking help [from Allah]. The people saw from his seeking of help that he had no mention except of Nahāwand and Ibn Muqarrin. He said: A Bedouin came to them and said: What has reached you about Nahāwand and Ibn Muqarrin? They said: And what is that? He said: Nothing. Then word of it was carried [1] to ʿUmar. He said: He sent for him and said: What is this mention of yours of Nahāwand and Ibn Muqarrin? If you have brought news, then tell us. He said: O Commander of the Believers, I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so, of such-and-such [tribe]. I went out with my family and my property, emigrating to Allah and His Messenger, until we stopped at such-and-such a place. When we set out, there was a man on a red camel, the like of which I had never seen. We said: Where have you come from? He said: From Iraq. We said: What is the news of the people? He said: They met in battle and Allah routed the enemy, and Ibn Muqarrin was killed. But by Allah, I do not know what Nahāwand is, nor who Ibn Muqarrin is. He said: Do you know which day of the week that was? He said: No, by Allah, I do not know. He said: But I know. Count your stages. He said: We set out on such-and-such a day and stopped at such-and-such a place, and he counted his stages. He said: That was such-and-such a day of the week. Perhaps you met a courier from among the couriers of the jinn, for they have couriers. He said: Then what Allah willed passed, and then the news came that they had met in battle on that very day.
