The Great Expedition of Badr

Translation

✧ [ The capture of Abu al-ʿĀṣ b. al-Rabīʿ ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Among the captives was Abu al-ʿĀṣ b. al-Rabīʿ b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. ʿAbd Shams, the son-in-law of the Messenger of God ﷺ and the husband of his daughter Zaynab. Ibn Hishām said: Khirāsh b. al-Ṣimmah, one of the Banū Ḥarām, took him captive. [ The reason for the marriage of Abu al-ʿĀṣ to Zaynab ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Abu al-ʿĀṣ was one of the men of Makkah counted among them for wealth, trustworthiness, and commerce. He was the son of Hālah bt. Khuwaylid, and Khadījah was his maternal aunt. Khadījah asked the Messenger of God ﷺ to give her in marriage to him, and the Messenger of God ﷺ would not oppose her—that was before revelation came to him—so he married her to him. She regarded him as being in the position of her own son. When God honored His Messenger ﷺ with prophethood, Khadījah and his daughters believed in him, affirmed his truthfulness, testified that what he brought was the truth, and entered his religion. But Abu al-ʿĀṣ remained firm in his polytheism.
