The Great Expedition of Badr

Translation

✧ The dream of Juhaym b. al-Ṣalt Al-Bayhaqī narrated from Ibn Shihāb, Ibn ʿUqbah, and ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, who said: When Quraysh encamped at al-Juḥfah, there was among them a man from Banū al-Muṭṭalib b. ʿAbd Manāf called Juhaym b. al-Ṣalt b. Makhramah—who later embraced Islam at Ḥunayn—Juhaym laid down his head and dozed off, then he started in fright and said to his companions: "Did you see the horseman who just stopped by me?" They said: "No, you are mad." He said: "A horseman just stopped by me and said: 'Abū Jahl has been killed, and ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah, and Shaybah, and Zamʿah, and Abū al-Bakhtarī, and Umayyah b. Khalaf,' and he enumerated men from the nobles of Quraysh who were killed on the day of Badr. Then I saw him strike the chest of his camel, then he sent it into the army, and no tent of the army's tents remained but it was struck by its blood." His companions said to him: "Satan has merely played with you." The report was brought up to Abū Jahl, and he said: "You have brought the lie of al-Muṭṭalib together with the lie of Banū Hāshim."
