Translation
✧ Badr: a famous village about four stages from the noble city of Madinah. It is said: it was named after Badr b. Mukhallad b. al-Naḍr b. Kinānah; and it is said: after Badr b. al-Ḥārith; and it is said: after Badr b. Kaladah. And it is said: Badr is the name of the well at that place, and it was so named because of its roundness or its clarity, for the full moon (al-badr) could be seen in it. But more than one of the elders of the Banū Ghifār denied that and said: It is our water and our dwellings, and no one named Badr ever owned it; it is merely a proper name for the place, like other names of lands. Imām al-Baghawī said: This is the opinion of the majority.
