The Detachment of Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ ᴿᴬ to Baṭn Rābigh
سَرِيَّةِ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ ؓ فِي عِشْرِينَ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ ؓ وَقِيلَ: فِي ثَمَانِيَةٍ إِلَى الْخَزَّازِ فِي ذِي الْقِعْدَةِ عَلَى رَأْسِ تِسْعَةِ أَشْهُرٍ مِنَ الْهِجْرَةِ. وَعُقِدَ لَهُ لِوَاءٌ أَبْيَضُ حَمَلَهُ الْمِقْدَادُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْبَهْرَانِيُّ، وَعَهِدَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَلَّا يُجَاوِزَ الْخَزَّازَ، وَهِيَ أَبْيَاتٌ عَنْ يَسَارِ الْجُحْفَةِ، حِينَ تَرُوحُ مِنَ الْجُحْفَةِ إِلَى مَكَّةَ. يَعْتَرِضُ عِيرًا لِقُرَيْشٍ تَمُرُّ بِهِمْ، فَخَرَجُوا عَلَى أَقْدَامِهِمْ يَكْمُنُونَ النَّهَارَ وَيَسِيرُونَ اللَّيْلَ حَتَّى صَبَّحُوا صُبْحَ خَمْسٍ الْخَزَّازَ مِنَ الْجُحْفَةِ قَرِيبًا مِنْ خُمٍّ، فَوَجَدُوا الْعِيرَ قَدْ مَرَّتْ بِالْأَمْسِ فَانْصَرَفُوا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ. وَلَمْ يَلْقَ كَيْدًا. قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: ذَكَرَ بَعْضُ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ أَنَّ بَعْثَ سَعْدٍ هَذَا كَانَ بَعْدَ حَمْزَةَ.
Translation
✧ The detachment of Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ ؓ with twenty men from the Emigrants ؓ. It is said: with eight, to al-Khazzāz in Dhū al-Qaʿdah at the beginning of nine months from the Hijrah. A white banner was tied for him, carried by al-Miqdād b. ʿAmr al-Bahrānī, and the Messenger of God ﷺ charged him not to go beyond al-Khazzāz, which are some houses to the left of al-Juḥfah, when you go from al-Juḥfah toward Makkah. He was to intercept a caravan of Quraysh passing by them, so they went out on foot, hiding by day and traveling by night until they came to al-Khazzāz on the morning of the fifth day from al-Juḥfah, near Khumm. They found that the caravan had passed the day before, so they returned to Madinah. They encountered no fighting. Ibn Hishām said: Some scholars mentioned that this sending of Saʿd was after Ḥamzah.
