Some matters that occurred between the Messenger ﷺ and the Jews, Christians, and hypocrites in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah
Translation
✧ What was revealed of the Qurʾān concerning what the Jews and Christians originated Then He gathered the people of the two Books together, and mentioned what they had originated and invented, of the Jews and Christians, and said: “Indeed, those who disbelieve in the signs of Allah and kill the prophets without right and kill those who enjoin justice from among the people” up to His saying: “Say, O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty” (Q 3:21–26), that is, Lord of the servants, and the King besides whom none else judges among them. “You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will, and You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is all good” (Q 3:26), that is, there is no god but You. “Indeed, You are over all things competent” (Q 3:26), that is, none other than You is able to do this, by Your authority and Your power. “You cause the night to enter the day, and You cause the day to enter the night, and You bring the living out of the dead, and You bring the dead out of the living” (Q 3:27) by that power, “and You provide for whom You will without account” (Q 3:27). None other than You is able to do that, and none does it except You. That is, if I had given ʿĪsā authority over the things by which they claim that he is a god—of giving life to the dead, healing the sick, creating birds from clay, and informing of unseen things—in order to make him thereby a sign for the people and a confirmation of him in his prophethood with which I sent him to his people, then indeed of My authority and power is what I did not give him: the granting of sovereignty to kings by the command of prophethood and placing it wherever You will, the causing of the night to enter the day and the day to enter the night, the bringing out of the living from the dead and the bringing out of the dead from the living, and the provision of whom You will, whether righteous or wicked, without account. All of that I did not give ʿĪsā authority over, nor did I make him possess it. Was there not in that for them a lesson and a clear proof that if he had been a god, all of that would have been his? Yet he, in their knowledge, flees from kings and moves away from them in the lands, from one land to another. What was revealed of the Qurʾān in admonishing the believers Then He admonished the believers and warned them, and said: “Say, if you love Allah” (Q 3:31), that is, if this saying of yours is true, out of love for Allah and glorification of Him, “then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you your sins” (Q 3:31), that is, what has passed of your disbelief. “And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. Say, obey Allah and the Messenger” (Q 3:31–32), for you know him and find him in your Book. “But if they turn away” (Q 3:32), that is, upon their disbelief, “then indeed Allah does not love the disbelievers.”
