Some matters that occurred between the Messenger ﷺ and the Jews, Christians, and hypocrites in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah
[ إِشْرَاكُهُمْ بِاللَّهِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ النَّحَّامُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، وَقَرْدَمُ بْنُ كَعْبٍ، وَبَحْرِيُّ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، فَقَالُوا لَهُ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ، أَمَا تَعْلَمُ مَعَ اللَّهِ إلَهًا غَيْرَهُ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: اللَّهُ لَا إلَهَ إلَّا هُوَ، بِذَلِكَ بُعِثْتُ، وَإِلَى ذَلِكَ أَدْعُو. فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ فِيهِمْ وَفِي قَوْلِهِمْ: قُلْ أَيُّ شَيْءٍ أَكْبَرُ شَهَادَةً قُلِ اللَّهِ شَهِيدٌ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكُمْ وَأُوحِيَ إِلَيَّ هَذَا الْقُرْآنُ لِأُنْذِرَكُمْ بِهِ وَمَنْ بَلَغَ أَئِنَّكُمْ لَتَشْهَدُونَ أَنَّ مَعَ اللَّهِ آلِهَةً أُخْرَى قُلْ لَا أَشْهَدُ قُلْ إِنَّمَا هُوَ إِلَهٌ وَاحِدٌ وَإِنَّنِي بَرِيءٌ مِمَّا تُشْرِكُونَ الَّذِينَ آتَيْنَاهُمُ الْكِتَابَ يَعْرِفُونَهُ كَمَا يَعْرِفُونَ أَبْنَاءَهُمُ الَّذِينَ خَسِرُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ فَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ. [ ادِّعَاؤُهُمْ أَنَّ عُزَيْرًا ابْنُ اللَّهِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَلَامُ بْنُ مِشْكَمٍ، وَنُعْمَانُ بْنُ أَوْفَى أَبُو أَنَسٍ، وَمَحْمُودُ بْنُ دِحْيَةَ، وَشَأْسُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ، وَمَالِكُ بْنُ الصَّيْفِ، فَقَالُوا لَهُ: كَيْفَ نَتَّبِعُكَ وَقَدْ تَرَكْتَ قِبْلَتَنَا، وَأَنْتَ لَا تَزْعُمُ أَنَّ عُزَيْرًا ابْنُ اللَّهِ ؟ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي ذَلِكَ مِنْ قَوْلِهِمْ: وَقَالَتِ الْيَهُودُ عُزَيْرٌ ابْنُ اللَّهِ وَقَالَتِ النَّصَارَى الْمَسِيحُ ابْنُ اللَّهِ ذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُمْ بِأَفْوَاهِهِمْ يُضَاهِئُونَ قَوْلَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْ قَبْلُ قَاتَلَهُمُ اللَّهُ أَنَّى يُؤْفَكُونَ إلَى آخِرِ الْقِصَّةِ.
Translation
✧ [Their association of partners with Allah] Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Naḥḥām b. Zayd, Qardam b. Kaʿb, and Baḥrī b. ʿAmr came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said to him: “O Muḥammad, do you not know that there is a god other than Allah?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Allah—there is no god but He. With that I have been sent, and to that I call.” So Allah revealed concerning them and their statement: “Say, ‘What thing is greatest as testimony?’ Say, ‘Allah is witness between me and you. And this Qur’an was revealed to me that I may warn you thereby and whomever it reaches. Do you indeed testify that there are other gods with Allah?’ Say, ‘I do not testify.’ Say, ‘He is only One God, and indeed I am free of what you associate.’ Those to whom We gave the Book recognize him as they recognize their own sons. Those who have lost their own selves—they do not believe.” [Their claim that ʿUzayr is the son of Allah] Ibn Isḥāq said: Salām b. Mishkam, Nuʿmān b. Awfā Abū Anas, Maḥmūd b. Diḥyah, Sha’s b. Qays, and Mālik b. al-Ṣayf came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said to him: “How can we follow you when you have abandoned our qiblah, and you do not claim that ʿUzayr is the son of Allah?” So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed concerning that statement of theirs: “The Jews said, ‘ʿUzayr is the son of Allah,’ and the Christians said, ‘The Messiah is the son of Allah.’ That is their statement from their mouths, imitating the statement of those who disbelieved before. May Allah fight them; how are they deluded?” to the end of the narrative.
