The story of Noah (peace be upon him)

Translation

✧ His bequest to his son (peace and blessings be upon him) It is reported on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr that he said: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man from among the desert dwellers came, wearing a striped jubba fastened with silk brocade. He said: "Indeed, this companion of yours has placed every horseman, son of a horseman low" — or he said: "He intends to place every horseman, son of a horseman low, and elevate every shepherd, son of a shepherd." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seized the collar of his jubba and said: "Shall I not see upon you the clothing of one who does not understand?" Then he said: "Indeed Allah's Prophet Nūḥ ﷺ, when death approached him, said to his son: I am about to recount to you the bequest. I command you with two things and forbid you two things. I command you with 'There is no god but Allah,' for indeed were the seven heavens and the seven earths placed in one pan of a scale, and 'There is no god but Allah' placed in the other pan, 'There is no god but Allah' would outweigh them. And if the seven heavens and the seven earths were an undivided ring, 'There is no god but Allah' would break them. And with 'Glory be to Allah and with His praise,' for it is the prayer of every thing, and by it creation is granted sustenance. And I forbid you from associating partners and from pride." He said: I said, or it was said: "O Messenger of Allah, this associating partners we have come to know, but what is pride? Is it that one of us should have two fine sandals with two fine straps?" He said: "No." He said: "Is it that one of us should have a garment he wears?" He said: "No." He said: "Is it that one of us should have a mount he rides?" He said: "No." He said: "Is it that one of us should have companions who sit with him?" He said: "No." It was said: "O Messenger of Allah, then what is pride?" He said: "It is foolishly rejecting the truth and belittling people." And this is a sound chain, though they did not record it. And the People of the Book claim that Nūḥ ﷺ, when he boarded the ark, was six hundred years old. And we have already quoted the like from Ibn ʿAbbās. And he added: and after that he lived three hundred and fifty years. There is need for scrutiny in this statement. Moreover, if it cannot be reconciled with the indication of the Qurʾān, then it is sheer error, for the Qurʾān implies that Nūḥ remained among his people after being sent and before the flood for a thousand years less fifty — as the Most High says: "And We certainly sent Nūḥ to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years less fifty, and the flood seized them while they were wrongdoers." [Al-ʿAnkabūt: 14]. Then Allah knows best how long he lived after that. If what is preserved from Ibn ʿAbbās that he was sent when he was four hundred and eighty years old, and that he lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years, then on this basis he would have lived one thousand seven hundred and eighty years. And when death approached Nūḥ, it was said to him: How did you find the world? He said: Like a house with two doors; I entered from one of them and left from the other. The grave of Nūḥ. As for his grave ﷺ, it is reported on the authority of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Sābiṭ that the grave of Nūḥ ﷺ is in the Sacred Mosque. And this is stronger and more established than the account mentioned by many later scholars, that it is in a town in the Bekaa known today as Kark Nūḥ, and there is a mosque built there because of that, and endowments have been assigned to it, as has been mentioned. And Allah knows best what is correct.
