Some matters that occurred between the Messenger ﷺ and the Jews, Christians, and hypocrites in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah
[ ادِّعَاؤُهُمْ أَنَّهُمْ أَحِبَّاءُ اللَّهِ ] وَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ نُعْمَانُ بْنُ أَضَاءَ، وَبَحْرِيُّ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، وَشَأْسُ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ، فَكَلَّمُوهُ وَكَلَّمَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ، وَدَعَاهُمْ إلَى اللَّهِ، وَحَذَّرَهُمْ نِقْمَتَهُ؛ فَقَالُوا مَا تُخَوِّفُنَا يَا مُحَمَّدُ، نَحْنُ وَاَللَّهِ أَبْنَاءُ اللَّهِ وَأَحِبَّاؤُهُ، كَقَوْلِ النَّصَارَى. فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِيهِمْ وَقَالَتِ الْيَهُودُ وَالنَّصَارَى نَحْنُ أَبْنَاءُ اللَّهِ وَأَحِبَّاؤُهُ قُلْ فَلِمَ يُعَذِّبُكُمْ بِذُنُوبِكُمْ بَلْ أَنْتُمْ بَشَرٌ مِمَّنْ خَلَقَ يَغْفِرُ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيُعَذِّبُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَلِلَّهِ مُلْكُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَإِلَيْهِ الْمَصِيرُ
Translation
✧ [ Their Claim That They Are the Beloved of Allah ] Al-Nuʿmān b. Aḍāʾ, Baḥrī b. ʿAmr, and Shaʾs b. ʿAdī came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and spoke with him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke with them, called them to Allah, and warned them of His punishment. They said, "What do you frighten us with, O Muḥammad? By Allah, we are the sons of Allah and His beloved ones," like the saying of the Christians. So Allah, Exalted is He, revealed concerning them: "The Jews and the Christians say, 'We are the children of Allah and His beloved ones.' Say, 'Then why does He punish you for your sins? Rather, you are human beings from among those He has created. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, and to Him is the final return.'"
