Some matters that occurred between the Messenger ﷺ and the Jews, Christians, and hypocrites in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah

Translation

✧ [Their Denial of Revelation] Ibn Isḥāq said: Sukayn and ʿAdī b. Zayd said: O Muḥammad, we do not know that God has sent down anything upon any human after Moses. So God, exalted is He, sent down concerning that statement of theirs: Indeed, We have revealed to you as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him, and We revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the tribes, Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon, and We gave David the Psalms; and messengers We have recounted to you before, and messengers We have not recounted to you; and God spoke to Moses directly—messengers bearing good tidings and warning, so that mankind might have no argument against God after the messengers; and God is mighty, wise. And a group of them entered upon the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said to them: Indeed, by God, you know that I am a messenger from God to you. They said: We do not know it, and we do not testify to it. So God, exalted is He, sent down concerning that statement of theirs: But God bears witness to what He has sent down to you; He sent it down with His knowledge, and the angels bear witness; and God suffices as a witness. And Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ called the Jews to Islam and encouraged them therein, and warned them against other than God and His punishment, but they refused him and disbelieved in what he brought them. So Muʿādh b. Jabal, Saʿd b. ʿUbādah, and ʿUqbah b. Wahb said to them: O assembly of Jews, fear God, for by God, you know that he is the Messenger of God. You used to mention him to us before his sending, and describe him to us by his description. Then Rāfiʿ b. Ḥuraymilah and Wahb b. Yahūdhā said: We never said this to you, and God has not sent down any book after Moses, nor sent any bearer of good tidings or any warner after him. So God, exalted is He, sent down concerning that statement of theirs: O People of the Book, there has come to you Our Messenger, making clear to you after a cessation of the messengers, lest you say: There came to us no bearer of good tidings and no warner. Indeed, there has come to you a bearer of good tidings and a warner, and God is capable of all things. Then He recounted to them the story of Moses and what he encountered from them, their breaking away from him, and how they rejected the command of God until they wandered in the earth for forty years as a punishment.
