Some matters that occurred between the Messenger ﷺ and the Jews, Christians, and hypocrites in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah
[ إنْكَارُ الْيَهُودِ نُبُوَّةَ سليمان - عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ - وَرَدُّ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمْ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَذَلِكَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِيمَا بَلَغَنِي - لَمَّا ذَكَرَ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنَ دَاوُدَ فِي الْمُرْسَلِينَ، قَالَ بَعْضُ أَحْبَارِهِمْ: أَلَا تَعْجَبُونَ مِنْ مُحَمَّدٍ، يَزْعُمُ أَنَّ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنَ دَاوُدَ كَانَ نَبِيًّا، وَاَللَّهِ مَا كَانَ إلَّا سَاحِرًا. فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِي ذَلِكَ مِنْ قَوْلِهِمْ وَمَا كَفَرَ سُلَيْمَانُ وَلَكِنَّ الشَّيَاطِينَ كَفَرُوا أَيْ بِاتِّبَاعِهِمْ السِّحْرَ وَعَمَلِهِمْ بِهِ. وَمَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَى الْمَلَكَيْنِ بِبَابِلَ هَارُوتَ وَمَارُوتَ وَمَا يُعَلِّمَانِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ
Translation
✧ [The Jews’ denial of the prophethood of Solomon ﷺ and God’s reply to them] Ibn Isḥāq said: That was because the Messenger of God ﷺ, as it has reached me, when he mentioned Solomon son of David among the messengers, some of their rabbis said: “Do you not wonder at Muḥammad? He claims that Solomon son of David was a prophet. By God, he was nothing but a sorcerer.” So God Almighty sent down concerning that, from their saying: “Solomon did not disbelieve, but the devils disbelieved” (Qurʾān 2:102), meaning by their following sorcery and their acting upon it. “And that which was sent down upon the two angels in Babylon, Hārūt and Mārūt, but they do not teach anyone” (Qurʾān 2:102).
