The Prophet's emigration ﷺ

✧ Abū Jaʿfar b. Jarīr narrated, saying: Yūnus b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to me, from Ibn Wahb, from Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Jumaḥī: that it reached him concerning the sermon of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the first Friday he prayed in Madinah among the Banū Sālim b. ʿAwf: Praise be to Allah. I praise Him and seek His help, and I seek His forgiveness and His guidance [and I believe in Him and do not disbelieve in Him, and I take as enemies those who disbelieve in Him,] and I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah, alone without partner, and that Muḥammad is His servant and His messenger. He sent him with guidance, light, and admonition, after a cessation of messengers, a paucity of knowledge, a straying of people, a severance from time, a nearness of the Hour, and a closeness of the appointed term. Whoever obeys Allah and His messenger has been guided aright, and whoever disobeys Allah and His messenger has erred and fallen short and strayed far astray. I enjoin you to fear Allah, for it is the best thing a Muslim enjoins upon a Muslim: that he urge him toward the Hereafter and command him to fear Allah. So beware of what Allah has warned you about from Himself, [and there is no counsel better than that] and no remembrance better than that. Indeed, fear of Allah for one who acts upon it with dread and fear of his Lord is a true aid in what you seek of the matter of the Hereafter. Whoever sets right what is between him and Allah in his affair, in secret and in public, intending thereby only the face of Allah, it will be a remembrance for him in his present affair and a store for what comes after death, when a person is in need of what he has sent ahead. And whatever is other than [that] he will wish that between it and him there were a far distance. And Allah warns you of Himself, and Allah is kind to His servants. And He who has confirmed His word and fulfilled His promise—there is no breach of that—for He says: “The word is not changed with Me, and I am not unjust to the servants.” So fear Allah in your present affair and your future one, in secret and in public, for whoever fears Allah, He will atone for his evil deeds and magnify his reward. Whoever fears Allah has attained a great attainment. Indeed, fear of Allah [wards off] His wrath, His punishment, and His anger, and it whitens faces, pleases the Lord, and raises one’s degree. [Take] your portion and do not be negligent in the cause of Allah. Allah has taught you His book and made plain for you His path, so that He may know those who are truthful and know the liars. So do good as Allah has been good to you, and take as enemies His enemies, and strive in the cause of Allah with a true striving. He has chosen you and named you Muslims, so that he who perishes might perish upon clear proof, and he who lives might live upon clear proof. And there is no power except with Allah. So remember Allah much, and know that it is the best of this world and what is in it. And work for what comes after death, for whoever sets right what is between him and Allah, Allah will suffice him in what is between him and people. That is because Allah judges the truth over people, and they do not judge, and He possesses people, and they possess nothing from Him. Allah is greater, and there is no power except with Allah, the Exalted, the Mighty. Ibn Isḥāq said: The first sermon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered—as far as it has reached me from Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—and we seek refuge with Allah from saying about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what he did not say—is that he stood among them as a preacher, praised Allah and extolled Him with what He is worthy of, then said: “To proceed, O people, send forth for yourselves. By Allah, you will surely be struck down, then one of you will surely leave his sheep with no shepherd. Then his Lord will surely say to him, with no interpreter and no chamberlain to veil him from Him: ‘Did not My messenger come to you and convey to you, and I gave you wealth and bestowed favor upon you? So what have you sent forth for yourself?’ Then he will surely look right and left and see nothing. Then he will surely look before him and see nothing but Jahannam. So whoever can shield his face from the Fire, even with a piece of a date, let him do so. And whoever finds none, then with a good word, for by it a good deed is rewarded tenfold up to seven hundred times. And peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.”
