The story of Noah (peace be upon him)
✧ The progeny of Noah ﷺ The Prophet ﷺ said regarding the words of the Most High: “And We made his descendants the survivors,” that they are Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Wahb b. Munabbih said: Shem son of Noah is the father of the Arabs, the Persians, and the Byzantines; Ham is the father of the Sudanese; and Japheth is the father of the Turks, Gog and Magog. It is said that the Copts are from the descendants of Cush son of Ham, and the blackness came from the offspring of Ham because Noah slept and his private parts became uncovered; Ham saw them and did not cover them, while Shem and Japheth saw them and cast a garment over them. When he awoke, he knew what Ham and his brothers had done, and he prayed against them. Ibn Isḥāq said: The wife of Shem son of Noah was Ṣulb daughter of Batāwīl son of Maḥwīl son of Ḥānūkh son of Qayn son of Adam. She bore him a number of sons: Arpachshad, Aswad, Lāwudh, and Iram. He said: I do not know whether Iram was of the same mother as Arpachshad and his brothers or not. From the descendants of Lāwudh son of Shem are the Persians, Jurjān, Ṭasm, and ʿAmlīq, who is the father of the Amalekites. Among them were the tyrants in Syria who are called the Canaanites, and the pharaohs in Egypt. The people of al-Baḥrayn and ʿUmān were among them and are called Jāshim. Among them also were the Banū Umaym son of Lāwudh, the people of Wabār in the land of al-Raml, which lies between al-Yamāmah and al-Shiḥr. They had multiplied, but a punishment from God came upon them because of a sin they committed, and they perished, though a remnant of them survived; they are those who are called al-Nasnās. Ṭasm inhabited al-Yamāmah and al-Baḥrayn. Ṭasm, the Amalekites, Umaym, and Jāshim were Arab peoples whose tongue was Arabic. ʿAbīl joined Yathrib before it was built. The Amalekites joined Ṣanʿāʾ before it was named Ṣanʿāʾ. Some of them descended to Yathrib and drove out ʿAbīl from it; they settled at the place of al-Juḥfah, then a torrent came and swept them away, that is, destroyed them, so it was named al-Juḥfah. The children of Iram son of Shem. He said: Iram son of Shem begot ʿAwḍ, Ghāthir, and Ḥawīl. ʿAwḍ begot Ghāthir, ʿĀd, and ʿAbīl. Ghāthir son of Iram begot Thamūd and Jadīs. They were Arabs who spoke this Muḍarī tongue. The Arabs used to call these nations and Jurhum the pure Arabs (al-ʿarab al-ʿāribah). They called the descendants of Ishmael the Arabized Arabs (al-ʿarab al-mustaʿribah), because they spoke the language of these nations only after they settled among them. ʿĀd was in this sand as far as Ḥaḍramawt. Thamūd was at al-Ḥijr, between the Ḥijāz and Syria, up to Wādī al-Qurā. Jadīs joined Ṭasm, and they were with them in al-Yamāmah up to al-Baḥrayn; the name of al-Yamāmah at that time was Jaww. Jāshim settled ʿUmān. The Nabataeans are from the descendants of Nabīṭ son of Māsh son of Iram son of Shem. The Persians are the Banū Fāris son of Tīrash son of Māsūr son of Shem. He said: To Arpachshad son of Shem was born his son Qaynān, who was a sorcerer. To Qaynān was born Shālakh son of Arpachshad, without mention of Qaynān because of his sorcery that was mentioned. To Shālakh was born Ghābir, and to Ghābir Fāligh, whose name means “the divider,” because the earth was divided and the tongues were confounded in his days; and Qaḥṭān son of Ghābir. To Qaḥṭān were born Yaʿrub and Yaqẓān; they settled in Yemen, and he was the first to dwell in Yemen and the first to be greeted with “May you not be cursed.” To Fāligh son of Ghābir was born Arghū, and to Arghū Sārūgh, and to Sārūgh Nākhūr, and to Nākhūr Tārakh, whose name in Arabic is Āzar. To Āzar was born Abraham, ﷺ. To Arpachshad was also born Nimrod; and it is said he is Nimrod son of Cush son of Ham son of Noah. Hishām b. al-Kalbī said: The Sind and the Hind are the Banū Tūqīr son of Yaqṭun son of Ghābir son of Shālakh son of Arpachshad son of Shem son of Noah. Jurhum is from the descendants of Yaqṭun son of Ghābir. Ḥaḍramawt son of Yaqṭun, and Yaqṭun is Qaḥṭān according to those who trace his lineage to other than Ishmael. The Berbers are from the descendants of Thamīlā son of Mārib son of Fārān son of ʿAmr son of ʿAmlīq son of Lāwudh son of Shem son of Noah, except Ṣanhājah and Kattāmah, for they are the Banū Furayqish son of Ṣayfī son of Sabaʾ. Mention of the children of Japheth. The children of Japheth: As for Japheth, among his descendants are Jāmir, Mawʿiʿ, Mawrik, Bawwān, Fawbā, Māshij, and Tīrash. From the descendants of Jāmir are the kings of Persia according to one opinion. From the descendants of Tīrash are the Turks and the Khazars. From the descendants of Māshij are the Spaniards. From the descendants of Mawʿiʿ are Gog and Magog. From the descendants of Bawwān are the Slavs and Burjān. The Spaniards were anciently in the land of the Byzantines before any of the descendants of al-ʿĪṣ son of Isaac and others came there. Each group of these three—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—took a land and settled there, keeping others away from it. Among the descendants of Japheth are the Byzantines, who are the Banū Lanṭā son of Yūnān son of Japheth son of Noah. The children of Ham. The children of Ham: As for Ham, to him were born Cush, Miṣrāyim, Qūṭ, and Canaan. From the descendants of Cush is Nimrod son of Cush—and it is said he is from the descendants of Shem—and the rest of Ham's descendants became the inhabitants of the coasts: Nubia, Abyssinia, and the Zanj. It is said that Miṣrāyim begot the Copts and the Berbers. As for Qūṭ, it is said that he traveled to India and Sind and settled there, and its people are from his descendants. As for the Canaanites, some of them joined Syria; then the Children of Israel came and killed them there and expelled them from it, and Syria became the possession of the Children of Israel. Then the Byzantines rose against the Children of Israel and drove them from Syria to Iraq, except a few of them. Then the Arabs came and gained mastery over Syria. ʿĀd used to be called ʿĀd of Iram; when they perished, Thamūd was called Thamūd of Iram. He said: The people of the Torah claim that Arpachshad was born to Shem when Shem was one hundred and two years old, and Shem's entire lifespan was six hundred years. Then to Arpachshad was born Qaynān when Arpachshad was thirty-five years old, and his lifespan was four hundred and thirty-eight years. Then to Qaynān was born Shālakh when he was thirty-nine years old; the duration of Qaynān's life is not mentioned in the books because of his sorcery that we mentioned. Then to Shālakh was born Ghābir when he was thirty years old, and his entire lifespan was four hundred and thirty-three years. Then to Ghābir were born Fāligh and his brother Qaḥṭān. Fāligh's birth was one hundred and forty years after the Flood, and his lifespan was four hundred and seventy-four years. Then to Fāligh was born Arghū after thirty years of Fāligh's life, and his lifespan was two hundred and thirty-nine years. To Arghū was born Sārūgh when he was thirty-two years old, and his lifespan was two hundred and thirty-nine years. To Sārūgh was born Nākhūr after thirty years of his life, and his entire lifespan was two hundred and thirty years. Then to Nākhūr was born Tārakh, the father of Abraham, when he was twenty-seven years old, and his entire lifespan was two hundred and forty-eight years. To Tārakh—who is Āzar—was born Abraham, ﷺ. Between the Flood and the birth of Abraham were one thousand two hundred and sixty-three years, and that was after the creation of Adam by three thousand three hundred and thirty-seven years. To Qaḥṭān son of Ghābir was born Yaʿrub; to Yaʿrub was born Yashjub; Yashjub begot Sabaʾ; Sabaʾ begot Ḥimyar, Kaḥlān, ʿAmr, al-Ashʿar, Anmār, and Murr. ʿAmr son of Sabaʾ begot ʿAdī, and ʿAdī begot Lakhm and Judhām.
