The second pledge of al-Aqabah and what occurred therein
Translation
✧ [The Messenger’s covenant ﷺ upon the Anṣār] He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke. He recited the Qur’ān, called to Allah, and encouraged Islam. Then he said: “I pledge allegiance with you on the condition that you protect me from what you protect your women and sons from.” He said: Then al-Barāʾ b. Maʿrūr took his hand and said: “Yes, by Him who sent you with the truth as a prophet, we shall surely protect you from what we protect our waist-wrappers from. So accept our pledge, O Messenger of Allah, for we, by Allah, are sons of wars and people of the ring; we inherited it from elder to elder.” He said: Then Abū al-Haytham b. al-Tayyihān interrupted the speech while al-Barāʾ was speaking with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of Allah, between us and the men there are ropes, and we shall cut them—meaning the Jews. Might it be that if we do that and then Allah makes you victorious, you will return to your people and leave us?” He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said: “Rather, blood for blood, and destruction for destruction. I am of you and you are of me. I fight whom you fight, and I make peace with whom you make peace.” Ibn Hishām said: He said: “destruction for destruction,” meaning sanctity, that is, my protection is your protection and my sanctity is your sanctity. [The speech of al-ʿAbbās b. ʿUbādah among the Khazraj before the pledge] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah narrated to me that when the people gathered to pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, al-ʿAbbās b. ʿUbādah b. Naḍlah al-Anṣārī, the brother of Banū Sālim b. ʿAwf, said: “O assembly of Khazraj, do you know on what basis you are pledging allegiance to this man?” They said: “Yes.” He said: “You are pledging allegiance to him on war against the red and the black of people. If you think that when your wealth is ravaged as a calamity and your nobles are slain you will abandon him, then do so now. For by Allah, if you do that, it is disgrace in this world and the Hereafter. But if you think that you will fulfill for him what you have called him to, despite the ravaging of wealth and the slaying of nobles, then take him. For by Allah, he is the good of this world and the Hereafter.” They said: “We take him on the calamity of wealth and the slaying of nobles. And what is for us, O Messenger of Allah, if we fulfill that?” He said: “Paradise.” They said: “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched out his hand and they pledged allegiance to him. As for ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah, he said: By Allah, al-ʿAbbās said that only to tighten the covenant for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ upon their necks. As for ʿAbd Allah b. Abī Bakr, he said: Al-ʿAbbās said that only to delay the people that night, hoping that ʿAbd Allah b. Ubayy b. Salūl would attend it and thus the people’s affair would be stronger. Allah knows best which of that it was. [The lineage of Salūl] Ibn Hishām said: Salūl is a woman of Khuzāʿah, and she is the mother of Ubayy b. Mālik b. al-Ḥārith. Asʿad b. Zurārah took his ﷺ hand, and he was the youngest of the seventy, and said: “Gently, O people of Yathrib. We did not strike the livers of the riding camels toward him except that we know that he is the Messenger of Allah, and that bringing him out today means parting with all the Arabs, the slaying of your best ones, and the swords biting you. So either you be patient with that and take him, and your reward is with Allah, or you fear for yourselves with a great fear and leave him, for that would be a better excuse for you before Allah.” They said: “O Asʿad, remove your hand from us, for by Allah, we shall not abandon this pledge nor revoke it.” So we rose to him man by man, and he took from us and stipulated, and gave us Paradise for that. Kaʿb b. Mālik said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said: “Bring out to me from among you twelve leaders to be over their people regarding what is among them.” So they brought out from among them twelve leaders: nine from the Khazraj and three from the Aws.
