The second pledge of al-Aqabah and what occurred therein

Translation

✧ [ Al-ʿAbbās seeks assurances for the Prophet ﷺ ] He said: We gathered in the mountain pass waiting for the Messenger of God ﷺ, until he came to us accompanied by his uncle al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, who at that time was still on the religion of his people, except that he wished to attend to the matter of his nephew and to secure assurances for him. When he sat down, the first to speak was al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and he said: O assembly of al-Khazraj—he said: the Arabs used to call this branch of the Anṣār only al-Khazraj, both its Khazraj and its Aws—indeed Muḥammad is of us, as you have known, and we have protected him from our people, from those who share our opinion of him. So he is in honor among his people and in security in his land. And he has refused anything but to incline toward you and to join you. So if you consider that you will fulfill for him what you have summoned him to, and protect him from those who oppose him, then you and the burden you have taken upon yourselves are responsible for that. But if you consider that you will hand him over and forsake him after he has gone out to you, then from now leave him. For he is in honor and protection among his people and in his land. He said: We said to him: We have heard what you have said, so speak, O Messenger of God, and take for yourself and for your Lord whatever you wish.
