The Messenger of Allah's ﷺ presenting himself to the tribes

Translation

✧ [Suwayd b. Ṣāmit and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah al-Anṣārī, then al-Ẓafarī, narrated to me from elders of his people, who said: Suwayd b. Ṣāmit, brother of the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf, came to Makkah as a pilgrim on ḥajj or ʿumrah. His people used to call him al-Kāmil (the Perfect) among themselves because of his toughness, his poetry, his nobility, and his lineage. He is the one who says: : Alā rubba man tadʿū ṣadīqan wa-law tarā maqālatahu bi-l-ghaybi sāʾaka mā yafrī maqālatuhu ka-l-shahdi mā kāna shāhidan Wa-bi-l-ghaybi maʾthūrun ʿalā thughrati al-naḥri yasurruka bādīhi wa-taḥta adīmihi Namīmatu ghishshin tabtarī ʿaqaba al-ẓahri tubīnu laka al-ʿaynāni mā huwa kātimun Min al-ghilli wa-l-baghḍāʾi bi-l-naẓari al-shazri fa-rishnī bi-khayrin ṭālamā qad baraytanī Fa-khayru al-mawālī man yarīshu wa-lā yabrī He is also the one who says: He challenged a man from Banū Sulaym, then one of the Banū Ziʿb b. Mālik, to a wager of a hundred she-camels before a soothsayer among the soothsayers of the Arabs, and she ruled in his favour. He and the Sulamī departed from her, with no one else with them, and when the road separated them, he said: What of my property, O brother of Banū Sulaym? He said: I will send it to you. He said: Who will guarantee me that if death should afflict me by it? He said: I will. He said: No, by the One in whose hand is the soul of Suwayd, you shall not part from me until my property is brought to me. So he took hold of him and struck the ground with him, then bound him with ropes, then went off with him to the abode of Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf. He remained with him until Sulaym sent to him what was owed to him. He said concerning that: : Lā taḥsabannī yā bna Ziʿbi bni Mālikin ka-man kunta turdī bi-l-ghuyūbi wa-takhtilu Taḥawwalta qirnan idh ṣuriʿta bi-ʿizzatin kadhālika inna al-ḥāzima al-mutaḥawwilu Ḍarabtu bihi ibṭa al-shimāli fa-lam yazal ʿalā kulli ḥālin khudduhu huwa asfalu In many poems that he used to recite. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ approached him when he heard of him, and called him to Allah and to Islam. Suwayd said to him: Perhaps what you have is like what I have. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: And what do you have? He said: The scroll of Luqmān—meaning the wisdom of Luqmān. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: Present it to me. So he presented it to him. He said to him: This is indeed fine speech, but what I have is better than this—a Qurʾān that Allah, Exalted is He, sent down upon me, which is guidance and light. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the Qurʾān to him and called him to Islam. He did not distance himself from it, and said: This is indeed good speech. Then he turned away from him and came to Madinah to his people. It was not long before the Khazraj killed him, for there were men of his people who would say: We see that he was killed while he was a Muslim. His killing was before the Day of Buʿāth.
