Translation

✧ Mention of the Garden The Garden and the Fire were created before Adam. ʿAbd Allāh b. Salām said: The Garden is in the heaven. And this is indicated by His saying: “near the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary, near it is the Garden of Refuge” (Q 53:14–15). Mujāhid said: “And in the heaven is your provision” (Q 51:22): he said: rain; “and what you are promised” (Q 51:22): he said: the Garden. And that the Garden had already been created is indicated by His saying, Exalted is He: “Dwell, you and your wife, in the Garden” (Q 2:35). Saʿīd b. Jubayr related from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: The Throne of God was upon the water, then He made a Garden, then He made another below it, then He covered it with a single pearl, and He said: “And besides these two are two Gardens” (Q 55:62). From Anas, from the Prophet ﷺ, that he said: “Indeed, in the Garden there is a tree in whose shade a rider travels for a hundred years and does not traverse it.” From Abū Bakr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Qays, from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “The Gardens of Firdaws are four: two of gold, their vessels, ornaments, and contents; and two of silver, their vessels, ornaments, and contents. And there is nothing between the people and looking at their Lord, Mighty and Majestic, except the mantle of pride upon His face, Mighty and Majestic, in the Garden of ʿAdn.” Aḥmad said: with his chain from Abū al-Mudallah that he heard Abū Hurayrah say: We said: O Messenger of God, tell us about the Garden, what is its construction? He said: “Its bricks are of silver, its mortar is fragrant musk, its pebbles are pearls and rubies, and its soil is saffron. Whoever enters it will enjoy bliss and not suffer misery, will live forever and not die, his garments will not wear out, and his youth will not fade.” This ḥadīth is ḥasan, and the two before it are in the two Ṣaḥīḥs.
