Translation
✧ Abū Bakr's entry into the protection of Ibn al-Dughunnah and his returning that protection to him [The reason for Ibn al-Dughunnah's protection of Abū Bakr] Ibn Isḥāq said: Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ, as Muḥammad b. Muslim (Ibn Shihāb) al-Zuhrī narrated to me, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah ؓ, when Makkah became constricted for him and he suffered harm there, and he saw from Quraysh's collusion against the Messenger of God ﷺ and his companions what he saw, he asked permission of the Messenger of God ﷺ to emigrate, and he permitted him. So Abū Bakr went out as an emigrant, until when he had traveled from Makkah for a day or two, Ibn al-Dughunnah, the brother of the Banū al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd Manāt b. Kinānah, met him, and he was then the chief of the Aḥābīsh. [The Aḥābīsh] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Aḥābīsh are: Banū al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd Manāt b. Kinānah, and al-Hūn b. Khuzaymah b. Mudrikah, and Banū al-Muṣṭaliq of Khuzāʿah. Ibn Hishām said: They allied together, and they were called al-Aḥābīsh (because they made an alliance at a valley called al-Aḥbash in lower Makkah) for the alliance. And it is said: Ibn al-Dughaynah. Ibn Isḥāq said: al-Zuhrī narrated to me, from ʿUrwah (b. al-Zubayr), from ʿĀʾishah ؓ, she said: Ibn al-Dughunnah said: Where to, O Abū Bakr? He said: My people have driven me out, harmed me, and made things narrow for me. He said: And why? By God, you adorn the clan, you help in misfortunes, you do good, and you earn for the destitute. Return, for you are in my protection. So he returned with him, until when he entered Makkah, Ibn al-Dughunnah stood and said: O assembly of Quraysh, I have granted protection to Ibn Abī Quḥāfah, so let no one approach him except with good. She said: So they held back from him. [The reason for Abū Bakr's leaving the protection of Ibn al-Dughunnah] She said: Abū Bakr had a prayer place at the door of his house in Banū Jumaḥ, and he used to pray in it. He was a tender-hearted man; when he recited the Qurʾān, he wept. She said: So the boys, slaves, and women would stop by him, marveling at what they saw of his appearance. She said: Some men of Quraysh went to Ibn al-Dughunnah and said to him: O Ibn al-Dughunnah, you did not grant protection to this man so that he could harm us. He is a man who, when he prays and recites what Muḥammad has brought, becomes tender and weeps, and he has a manner and way about him; we fear for our boys, our women, and our weak ones that he may tempt them. So go to him and tell him to enter his house and do there whatever he wishes. She said: So Ibn al-Dughunnah went to him and said to him: O Abū Bakr, I did not grant you protection so that you could harm your people. They have disliked the place you are in and have been harmed by that from you. So enter your house and do in it whatever you like. He said: Or should I return your protection to you and be content with the protection of God? He said: Return my protection to me. He said: I have returned it to you. She said: So Ibn al-Dughunnah stood and said: O assembly of Quraysh, Ibn Abī Quḥāfah has returned my protection to me, so your affair is with your companion. Ibn Isḥāq said: And ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Qāsim narrated to me, from his father al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad, he said: A fool among the fools of Quraysh met him while he was heading to the Kaʿbah, and he threw dust on his head. He said: Al-Walīd b. al-Mughīrah, or al-ʿĀṣ b. Wāʾil, passed by Abū Bakr. He said: Abū Bakr said: Do you not see what this fool is doing? He said: You did that to yourself. He said: And he was saying: O Lord, how forbearing You are, O Lord, how forbearing You are, O Lord, how forbearing You are.
