The emigration to Abyssinia and what occurred therein

Translation

✧ The story of Abū Salamah ؓ regarding his protection [The polytheists’ irritation with Abū Ṭālib for his protection, Abū Lahab’s defense, and Abū Ṭālib’s poetry about that] Ibn Isḥāq said: As for Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Asad, my father Isḥāq b. Yasār narrated to me from Salamah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Abī Salamah that he narrated to him: that when Abū Salamah sought the protection of Abū Ṭālib, men from Banū Makhzūm walked to him and said: “O Abū Ṭālib, you have protected from us your nephew Muḥammad, so what is it with you and our companion that you protect him from us?” He said: “He sought my protection, and he is the son of my sister. If I do not protect the son of my sister, I will not protect the son of my brother.” Then Abū Lahab stood up and said: “O assembly of Quraysh, by God, you have gone too far against this old man. You keep assailing him regarding his protection from among his people. By God, you will either desist from him or we will stand with him in everything he stands for, until he attains what he wants.” He said: They said: “Rather, we will turn away from what you dislike, O Abū ʿUtbah.” He was a supporter and helper for them against the Messenger of God ﷺ, so they relented regarding that. Abū Ṭālib then became hopeful about him when he heard him say what he said, and he hoped that he would stand with him in the matter of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Abū Ṭālib said, inciting Abū Lahab to support him and the Messenger of God ﷺ: : Truly a man whose uncle is Abū ʿUtaybah is in a meadow where he is not subjected to wrongs. I say to him, and where is my sincere advice to him from him: O Abū Muʿtib, keep your blackness standing firm, and never accept, as long as you live, a share of time by which you would be reviled whenever you descend upon the gathering places. And entrust the path of incapacity to other than you among them, for you were not created to be permanently incapable. And wage war, for war is half; and you will not see a brother of war granted humiliation until he makes peace. How could that be when they have not committed any great offense against you, nor have they let you down whether gaining spoils or bearing fines? May God requite ʿAbd Shams and Nawfal on our behalf, and Taym and Makhzūm, with disobedience and sin, for their dividing, after affection and intimacy, our assembly, so that they might attain what is forbidden. You have lied, by the House of God, we will be stripped of Muḥammad, while you have not yet seen a day when he stands at the mountain pass. Ibn Hishām said: “nubzā” means “to be stripped.” Ibn Hishām said: One verse remained from it which we omitted.
