The emigration to Abyssinia and what occurred therein
Translation
✧ Mention of those who returned from the land of Abyssinia when the conversion of the people of Makkah to Islam reached them [The reason for the return of the emigrants to Abyssinia] Ibn Isḥāq said: The companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ who had gone out to the land of Abyssinia received word of the conversion of the people of Makkah to Islam. They set out returning because of what had reached them of that, until when they drew near to Makkah, it reached them that what they had been told about the conversion of the people of Makkah was false. None of them entered except under protection or in hiding. The reason for that—as is established in the Ṣaḥīḥ and elsewhere—was that the Messenger of God ﷺ sat one day with the polytheists, and God sent down upon him: By the star when it sets, your companion has not strayed [Q 53:1–2], reciting it to them until he finished it and prostrated. Those present of the Muslims, the polytheists, the jinn, and mankind prostrated. There was a reason for that which many of the exegetes have mentioned regarding His saying, exalted be He: And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he recited, Satan cast into his recitation; then God abolishes what Satan casts, and God makes precise His verses, and God is knowing, wise [Q 22:52]. They mentioned the story of the Gharānīq, and we have preferred to refrain from mentioning it, turning away, lest someone who does not put it in its proper place hear it. However, the origin of the story is in the Ṣaḥīḥ. Al-Bukhārī said with his chain of transmission from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: The Prophet ﷺ prostrated at the Sūrah of the Star, and the Muslims, the polytheists, the jinn, and mankind prostrated with him. The point is that when the one who carried the news saw the polytheists prostrating in imitation of the Messenger of God ﷺ, he believed that they had become Muslims and made peace with him, and that no dispute remained between them. The news flew with that and spread until it reached the emigrants to Abyssinia with it. They thought that it was true, so a group of them set out returning, hoping for that, while a group remained firm. Both were good and correct in what they did.
