Translation

✧ [The poetry of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith concerning the emigration to Abyssinia] Among the poetry that was said concerning Abyssinia was that of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith b. Qays b. ʿAdī b. Saʿd b. Sahm, when they found security in the land of Abyssinia, praised the protection of the Negus, and worshipped God without fearing anyone in that regard. The Negus had treated them well when they settled with him. He said: : O rider, convey from me a message that penetrates, to whoever hopes for the message of God and the religion, every person among God's servants is oppressed in the heart of Makkah, subjugated and afflicted. We have found God's land to be vast, delivering from humiliation, disgrace, and abasement. So do not remain in the humiliation of life and the shame of death and a defect that is not secure. We have followed the Messenger of God, while they have cast aside the word of the Prophet and exceeded in the scales. So make Your punishment upon the people who transgressed, and I seek refuge with You that they rise and oppress me. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith also said, mentioning Quraysh's expulsion of them from their land and reproaching some of his people for that: : My heart refused, I will not lie to you, to fight them against me, and my fingertips also refuse it. How can I fight a group who taught you the truth, not to mix it with falsehood? The servants of the jinn expelled them from the free part of their land, so they came to be in a matter of severe confusions. If there was in ʿAdī a trust, of ʿAdī b. Saʿd, from piety or connection, then I had hoped that was in you, by the praise of the One who is not won over by bribes. And I was replaced by a cub, the cub of every vile thing, with one of wickedness, the refuge of the weak and widows. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith also said: : That is Quraysh, denying God His due, as ʿĀd, Midian, and al-Ḥijr denied. If I do not flash like lightning, then let no land of earth, open or sea, contain me, in a land where Muḥammad worshipped God, I will make clear what is in the soul when the signal is given. So ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith, may God have mercy on him, was called "al-Mubriq" (the Flashing One) because of the line he said. [The poetry of ʿUthmān b. Maẓʿūn concerning that] ʿUthmān b. Maẓʿūn said, reproaching Umayyah b. Khalaf b. Wahb b. Ḥudhāfah b. Jumaḥ, who was his cousin, and who used to harm him because of his Islam. Umayyah was a nobleman among his people at that time: : O Taym b. ʿAmr, is it for what has come that you bear hatred, and before it the two gullies and the watercourse are gathering? Did you drive me out of the heart of Makkah, secure, and make me dwell in a white palace that cuts? You feather arrows whose feathers do not suit you, and you shape arrows whose feathers are all gathered for you. You fought noble, mighty peoples, and you destroyed peoples by whom you used to seek refuge. You will know, if a calamity ever befalls you and the rabble abandon you, what you have done. And Taym b. ʿAmr, whom ʿUthmān addresses, is Jumaḥ; his name was Taym.
