Mention of some of the harm the Messenger of Allah ﷺ suffered from his people
[ الْأَخْنَسُ بْنُ شَرِيقٍ، وَمَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ فِيهِ ] ( قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ ): وَالْأَخْنَسُ بْنُ شَرِيقِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ وَهْبٍ الثَّقَفِيُّ حَلِيفُ بَنِي زُهْرَةَ، وَكَانَ مِنْ أَشْرَافِ الْقَوْمِ وَمِمَّنْ يُسْتَمَعُ مِنْهُ، فَكَانَ يُصِيبُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ، وَيَرُدُّ عَلَيْهِ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِيهِ: وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَهِينٍ هَمَّازٍ مَشَّاءٍ بِنَمِيمٍ إلَى قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى: زَنِيمٍ وَلَمْ يَقُلْ: زَنِيمٍ لِعَيْبِ فِي نَسَبِهِ، لِأَنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَعِيبُ أَحَدًا بِنَسَبِ، وَلَكِنَّهُ حَقَّقَ بِذَلِكَ نَعْتَهُ لِيُعْرَفَ. وَالزَّنِيمُ: الْعَدِيدُ لِلْقَوْمِ. وَقَدْ قَالَ الْخَطِيمُ التَّمِيمِيُّ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ: : زَنِيمٌ تَدَاعَاهُ الرِّجَالُ زِيَادَةً كَمَا زِيدَ فِي عَرْضِ الْأَدِيمِ الْأَكَارِعُ.
Translation
✧ [Al-Akhnas b. Sharīq, and what Allah revealed concerning him] (Ibn Isḥāq said): And al-Akhnas b. Sharīq b. ʿAmr b. Wahb al-Thaqafī, ally of Banū Zuhrah, was one of the nobles of the people and among those whose word was heeded. He used to disparage the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and refute him, so Allah the Exalted revealed concerning him: “And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer, scorner, going about with malicious gossip” up to His saying, the Exalted: “a cruel one after all that, a bastard.” And He did not say “bastard” as a defect in his lineage, because Allah does not defame anyone by lineage, but He thus established his description so that he may be known. And al-zanīm is the one adopted into a people [i.e., intruder]. Indeed al-Khaṭīm al-Tamīmī said in the Jāhiliyyah: : A bastard whom men call out among themselves as an addition, like the addition of the shanks to the width of the tanned hide.
