Translation

✧ The story of ʿAmr b. Murrah al-Juhanī Al-Ṭabarānī said: ʿAlī b. Ibrāhīm al-Khuzāʿī al-Ahwāzī narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh b. Dāwūd b. Dilhāth b. Ismāʿīl b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Shurayḥ b. Yāsir b. Suwayd, the companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ, narrated to us; my father narrated to me from his father Dilhāth from his father Ismāʿīl that his father ʿAbd Allāh narrated to him from his father that his father Yāsir b. Suwayd narrated to him from ʿAmr b. Murrah al-Juhanī, who said: I went out to perform the pilgrimage in a group of my people in the Age of Ignorance. While I was in Makkah, I saw in my sleep a light shining from the Kaʿbah until it reached the mountain of Yathrib and the Ashʿar of Juhaynah. I heard a voice within the light saying: “The darkness has dispersed, the brightness has shone, and the Seal of the Prophets has been sent.” Then it shone again with another radiance until I looked upon the palaces of al-Ḥīrah and the white palaces of al-Madāʾin. I heard a voice from the light saying: “Islam has appeared, the idols have been broken, and the ties of kinship have been joined.” I woke up startled and said to my people: “By God, something will surely happen to this clan of Quraysh,” and I told them what I had seen. When we returned to our lands, a man came to me saying that someone called Aḥmad had been sent. I went to him and told him what I had seen. He said: “O ʿAmr b. Murrah, I am the Prophet sent to all servants. I call them to Islam, command them to preserve blood, maintain ties of kinship, worship God, reject idols, perform the pilgrimage to the House, and fast the month of Ramaḍān among twelve months. Whoever responds will have Paradise, and whoever disobeys will have the Fire. So believe in God, O ʿAmr, and God will protect you from the terror of Hell.” I said: “I bear witness that there is no god but God, and that you are the Messenger of God. I believe in what you have brought of lawful and unlawful, even if many peoples dislike it.” Then I recited to him some verses I had composed when I heard of him. We had an idol, and my father was its custodian, so I went to it and broke it, then joined the Prophet ﷺ, saying: I bear witness that God is true, and that I am the first to abandon the gods of stone; I have girded up the lower garment, migrating to you, traversing the desert after the hard grounds, To accompany the best of people in soul and father, the Messenger of the King of mankind above the celestial cords. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Welcome, O ʿAmr b. Murrah.” I said: “O Messenger of God, send me to my people, that God may bestow favor upon them through me as He bestowed favor upon me through you.” So he sent me to them and said: “Adhere to gentleness and right speech, and do not be harsh, arrogant, or envious.” He mentioned that he went to his people and called them to what the Messenger of God ﷺ had called him to, and they all became Muslims except one man among them. He brought them as a delegation to the Messenger of God ﷺ, who welcomed them, greeted them, and wrote a document for them. This is its copy: “In the name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. This is a document from God upon the tongue of the Messenger of God ﷺ, a truthful writing and a speaking truth, with ʿAmr b. Murrah al-Juhanī for Juhaynah b. Zayd: You shall have the interiors of the earth and its plains, the watercourses of the valleys and their ridges; you may cultivate its vegetation and drink its clear water, on condition that you acknowledge the fifth, perform the five prayers, and in the case of the tabīʿah and the ṣuraymah, if they are combined, two sheep; if they are separated, one sheep each. There is no charity upon the people of provisions, nor any obligation upon those who come to water. Witnesses to our Prophet ﷺ from the Muslims who were present include Qays b. Shammās.”
