The reports of the Jewish rabbis, Christian monks, and soothsayers and their glad tidings of the sending of the Beloved of the Most Merciful ﷺ

Translation

✧ [The command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Salman to enter a contract of emancipation to free himself from slavery] Salman said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "Enter a contract of emancipation, O Salman." So I contracted with my master for three hundred date palm seedlings that I would plant for him at al-Faqir, and forty uqiyyahs. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions: "Help your brother." So they helped me with the seedlings: one man with thirty offshoots, another with twenty offshoots, another with fifteen offshoots, and another with ten; each man helped according to what he had, until three hundred offshoots were gathered for me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "Go, O Salman, and dig the holes for them. When you are finished, come to me, and I will place them with my own hands." He said: So I dug the holes, and my companions helped me. When I had finished, I came to him and told him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out with me to them, and we began handing the offshoots to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed them with his own hand, until we had finished. By Him in whose hand is the soul of Salman, not a single offshoot of them died. He said: Then I delivered the palms, and the money remained owed by me. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought something like a chicken's egg of gold from some mine. He said: "What has the Persian who contracted emancipation done?" He said: So I was summoned to him, and he said: "Take this and pay what you owe with it, O Salman." He said: I said: "Where will this fall, O Messenger of Allah, compared to what I owe?" He said: "Take it, for Allah will fulfill it for you." He said: So I took it and weighed out for them from it, and by Him in whose hand is the soul of Salman, forty uqiyyahs. So I paid them their due from it, and Salman was freed. Then I witnessed the Trench with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as a free man, and after that no expedition with him passed me by. Ibn Ishaq said: Yazid b. Abi Habib narrated to me, from a man of ʿAbd al-Qays, from Salman, that he said: When I said, "Where will this fall compared to what I owe, O Messenger of Allah?", the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took it and turned it over on his tongue, then said: "Take it and pay them from it." So I took it and paid them their full due from it, forty uqiyyahs.
