Quraysh's Innovation of the Hums

Translation

✧ The Account of the Ḥums [The Ḥums according to Quraysh] Ibn Isḥāq said: Quraysh—I do not know whether before the Elephant or after it—had introduced the doctrine of the Ḥums, an opinion they held and propagated. They said: “We are the sons of Ibrāhīm, the people of the sanctuary, the guardians of the House, the residents and inhabitants of Makkah. No one among the Arabs has a right like ours, nor a standing like ours, and the Arabs do not recognize for anyone the like of what they recognize for us. So do not venerate anything of the profane land as you venerate the sacred territory, for if you do that, the Arabs will belittle your sanctity and say: ‘They have venerated of the profane land the like of what they venerated of the sacred territory.’” So they abandoned standing at ʿArafah and the departure from it, while they knew and acknowledged that it was among the rites and the pilgrimage and the religion of Ibrāhīm ﷺ. They held that the rest of the Arabs should stand upon it and depart from it, except that they said: “We are the people of the sanctuary, so it is not proper for us to leave the sacred territory, nor do we venerate other than it as we venerate it. We are the Ḥums, and the Ḥums are the people of the sanctuary.” Then they assigned to those of the Arabs who were born to them, whether residents of the profane land or the sacred territory, the like of what they had for themselves, by virtue of their birth to them: what is lawful for them is lawful for them, and what is forbidden to them is forbidden to them.
