Translation

✧ The Istisqāʾ (prayer for rain) of Abū Ṭālib through the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the thirst of Abū Ṭālib and his complaint of that to the Prophet ﷺ Ibn ʿAsākir related from Julhumah b. ʿArfaṭah who said: I arrived in Makkah while Quraysh were in a drought. One of them was saying: "Rely upon al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā." And another of them was saying: "Rely upon Manāt, the third, the other." Then an elderly man, handsome of face and sound of judgment, said: "How are you turned away while among you is the remnant of Ibrāhīm and the progeny of Ismāʿīl?" They said: "It is as though you mean Abū Ṭālib?" He said: "Indeed." So they all arose, and I arose with them, and we knocked on his door. A man handsome of face came out to us, wearing an izār with which he had wrapped himself. They rushed to him and said: "O Abū Ṭālib, the valley has become barren and the dependents are afflicted with drought. Come and pray for rain for us." So Abū Ṭālib went out, and with him was a boy as though he were a sun behind dark clouds, unveiled by a dust-colored cloud, and around him were small boys. Abū Ṭālib took him and pressed his back against the Kaʿbah, and the boy clung to his finger. There was not a shred of cloud in the sky. Then clouds came from here and there, and it rained abundantly and poured forth, and the valley flowed with water, and both the settled and the nomadic communities became fertile. About that Abū Ṭālib said: And a fair one by whose face rain-clouds are sought, a support for orphans and a protection for widows; The destitute of the clan of Hāshim seek refuge with him, and with him they are in blessing and bounties. And Ibn Saʿd said: Al-Azraq narrated to us, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAwn narrated to us, from ʿAmr b. Saʿīd that Abū Ṭālib said: I was at Dhū al-Majāz with my nephew, meaning the Prophet ﷺ, when thirst overtook me. I complained to him and said: "O nephew, I have become thirsty." I did not say that to him while seeing anything with him except distress. He said: Then he turned his hip and said: "O uncle, are you thirsty?" I said: "Yes." So he struck his heel into the ground, and there I was with water. He said: "Drink," so I drank. It has other chains of transmission related by al-Khaṭīb and Ibn ʿAsākir. Explanation of unusual words: Julhumah: with a jīm bearing ḍammah, a lām bearing sukūn, a hāʾ bearing ḍammah, and a mīm bearing fatḥah. Annā: in the sense of how (kayfa). Tuʾfakūn: you are turned away (tuṣrafūn). Thārū ilayhi: with the letter thāʾ, they arose (qāmū). Dujunah: with an unpointed dāl then a jīm, both bearing ḍammah: the shade; the plural is dujunāt. Qatmāʾ: with a qāf then a tāʾ with two dots above: the dust-colored, from qatām, with fatḥah, which is dust. Lādha bihi: he circumambulated around him (ṭāfa). Qazaʿah: a cloud. Aghdaqa: likewise (abundant rain). Ighdawdaqa: likewise (poured forth). Al-thimāl: discussion of it has preceded among his ﷺ names. Dhū al-Majāz: a place one farsakh from ʿArafah.
