The story of the creation of Adam (peace be upon him)
وَمِنْ ذَلِكَ وَعْظُ بَنِيهِ وعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: لَمَّا أَهْبَطَ اللَّهُ آدَمَ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ كَثُرَتْ ذُرِّيَّتُهُ فَاجْتَمَعَ إِلَيْهِ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ وَلَدُهُ، وَوَلَدُ وَلَدِهِ، وَوَلَدُ وَلَدِ وَلَدِهِ ، فَجَعَلُوا يَتَحَدَّثُونَ حَوْلَهُ وَآَدَمُ سَاكِتٌ لَا يَتَكَلَّمُ، فَقَالُوا: يَا أَبَانَا مَا لَنَا نَحْنُ نَتَكَلَّمُ وَأَنْتَ سَاكِتٌ لَا تَتَكَلَّمُ؟ قَالَ: يَا بُنَيَّ إِنَّ اللَّهَ -عَزَّ وَجَلَّ- لَمَّا أَهْبَطَنِي إِلَى الْأَرْضِ مِنْ جِوَارِهِ عَهِدَ إِلَيَّ فَقَالَ: يَا آدَمُ أَقِلَّ الْكَلَامَ حَتَّى تَرْجِعَ إِلَى جِوَارِي.
Translation
✧ And among that is his admonition to his sons From Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: When Allah brought Ādam down to the earth, his progeny became numerous. One day his children, his children’s children, and his children’s children’s children gathered around him, and they began talking around him while Ādam remained silent, not speaking. They said: Our father, why is it that we speak while you remain silent and do not speak? He said: My dear son, when Allah—mighty and majestic is He—brought me down to the earth from His vicinity, He made a covenant with me and said: O Ādam, speak little until you return to My vicinity.
