The Birth of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and His Suckling
Translation
✧ [Ḥalīmah ﷺ missed him when she brought him back, and Waraqah b. Nawfal found him] Ibn Isḥāq said: The people claim, in what they relate—and Allah knows best—that when his mother from the Saʿd tribe brought him to Makkah, he got lost from her among the people as she approached his family with him. She searched for him and did not find him, so she went to ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and said to him: ‘I arrived with Muḥammad this night. When I was in the upper part of Makkah, he became lost from me. By Allah, I do not know where he is.’ So ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib stood by the Kaʿbah, calling upon Allah to return him. They claim that Waraqah b. Nawfal b. Asad and another man of Quraysh found him, and they brought him to ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, saying to him: ‘This is your son. We found him in the upper part of Makkah.’ So ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib took him, placed him on his neck, and went around the Kaʿbah, seeking protection for him and supplicating for him. Then he sent him to his mother Āminah. Ibn Isḥāq said: Some of the people of knowledge narrated to me that among the things that prompted his mother from the Saʿd tribe to return him to his mother, along with what she mentioned to his mother of what she reported about him, was that a group of Abyssinian Christians saw him with her when she returned with him after his weaning. They looked at him, asked her about him, and turned him over. Then they said to her: ‘We will certainly take this boy and bring him to our king and our land, for this boy will have great importance, and we recognize his matter.’ The one who narrated to me claimed that she barely managed to escape with him from them.
