✧ THE WAR OF ḤĀṬIB Then there occurred the battle known as that of Ḥāṭib. He is Ḥāṭib b. Qays of the Banū Umayyah b. Zayd b. Mālik b. ʿAwf of al-Aws, and between it and the war of Sumayr there were about a hundred years. Between them were battle-days of which we have mentioned the well-known ones and omitted those that are not well-known. The war of Ḥāṭib was the last battle that took place between them except for the Day of Buʿāth, until God brought Islam. The cause of this war was that Ḥāṭib was a noble man, a chief. A man of the Banū Thaʿlabah b. Saʿd b. Dhubyān came to him and stayed as his guest. Then one day he went to the market of the Banū Qaynuqāʿ. Yazīd b. al-Ḥārith, known as Ibn Fusḥum — she was his mother — and he was of the Banū al-Ḥārith b. al-Khazraj, saw him. Yazīd said to a Jewish man: "My cloak for you if you give this Taghlibī a blow from behind." He took his cloak and gave him a blow from behind that those in the market heard. The Taghlibī called out: "O people of Ḥāṭib! Your guest has been struck from behind and disgraced!" Ḥāṭib was told of that, and he came to him and asked him who had struck him from behind. He pointed to the Jew, and Ḥāṭib struck him with the sword and split his skull. Ibn Fusḥum was told the news, and it was said to him: "The Jew has been killed; Ḥāṭib killed him." He hastened after Ḥāṭib and caught up with him after he had entered the houses of his family, and he met a man of the Banū Muʿāwiyah and killed him. War broke out between al-Aws and al-Khazraj, and they assembled and gathered and met at the bridge of the dam of the Banū al-Ḥārith b. al-Khazraj. Over the Khazraj on that day was ʿAmr b. al-Nuʿmān al-Bayāḍī, and over al-Aws was Ḥuḍayr b. Simāk al-Ashhalī. The report of the wars that had occurred between them had spread to the Arabs around them, and ʿUyaynah b. Ḥiṣn b. Ḥudhayfah b. Badr al-Fazārī and Khiyār b. Mālik b. Ḥammād al-Fazārī came to them. They arrived in al-Madīnah and spoke with al-Aws and al-Khazraj about peace, and they guaranteed to bear all that some of them claimed against others, but they refused. War occurred at the bridge, and ʿUyaynah and Khiyār witnessed it. They saw of their fighting and its fierceness what made them despair of bringing about reconciliation between them. On that day the victory was for al-Khazraj. This day is one of their most famous days, and after it there were several battles, all of them part of the war of Ḥāṭib. Among them:
