Translation

✧ The War of Rabīʿ al-Ẓafarī Then there was a war between the Banū Ẓafar of the Aws and the Banū Mālik b. al-Najjār of the Khazraj. Its cause was that Rabīʿ al-Ẓafarī used to pass through property belonging to a man of the Banū al-Najjār on his way to land of his own. The Najjārī prevented him, and they quarrelled, and Rabīʿ killed him. Their peoples gathered and fought a fierce battle, the fiercest fighting that had occurred between them, and the Banū Mālik b. al-Najjār were routed. Qays b. al-Khaṭīm al-Awsī said concerning that: Did Ghunyān's concern for ʿAmrah renew itself, so that she shuns us, or is our affair her affair? If she has gone away and her abode is far, today her abandonment has become clear to you. For no meadow among the meadows of the sand-grouse, as though its buttercups were lamps, is more beautiful than she, nor any pleasurable place of entering after its dark clouds have dispersed. And ʿAmrah is among the noblest of women; her sleeves waft musk. From it: We are the horsemen on the day of al-Rabīʿ; they have learned how its bodies are. Madness for war behind the sariḥ until its lance-shafts were broken. You see them drawing water like buckets, the ropes vying to pull them up. And it is long. Ḥassān b. Thābit al-Khazrajī answered him with a poem whose opening is: Its griefs have stirred your soul, and today its turns have left it. And from it: Yathrib knows that we are in it when the right becomes confused, its balance. Yathrib knows that we are in it when the rain withholds, its pastures. And Yathrib knows, when it goes to war, that in battle we are its horsemen. And Yathrib knows that its lowly are humbled in times of turmoil. And from it: When the Aws see us in our helmets, we shake the spears and their fires blaze. And they give the lead despite themselves, and their eagles alight at Milhām. So do not boast; seek a refuge, for the turns of fortune have returned to the Aws.
