Translation

✧ An Account of the Wells of the Quraysh Tribes in Makkah [Al-Ṭawiyy and Who Dug It] Ibn Hishām said: The Quraysh, before the digging of Zamzam, had dug wells in Makkah, according to what Ziyād b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Bakkāʾī narrated to us from Muḥammad b. Isḥāq. He said: ʿAbd Shams b. ʿAbd Manāf dug al-Ṭawiyy, which is the well at the upper part of Makkah near al-Bayḍāʾ, the house of Muḥammad b. Yūsuf (al-Thaqafī). [Bādhdhar and Who Dug It] Hāshim b. ʿAbd Manāf dug Bādhdhar, which is the well near al-Mustandhar, at the edge of al-Khandamah, at the mouth of the mountain pass of Abū Ṭālib. They claimed that when he dug it he said: "I shall make it a source of supply for the people." Ibn Hishām said: The poet said: : May God water the waters whose places I knew: Jurāb, Malkūm, Bādhdhar, and al-Ghamr. [Sajlah and Who Dug It] Ibn Isḥāq said: He dug Sajlah, which is the well of al-Muṭʿim b. ʿAdī b. Nawfal b. ʿAbd Manāf, from which they draw water today. The Banū Nawfal claim that al-Muṭʿim bought it from Asad b. Hāshim, while the Banū Hāshim claim that he gave it to him as a gift when Zamzam appeared and they became independent of those wells because of it. [Al-Ḥafr and Who Dug It] Umayyah b. ʿAbd Shams dug al-Ḥafr for himself. [Suqayyah and Who Dug It] The Banū Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā dug Suqayyah, which is the well of the Banū Asad. [Umm Aḥrād and Who Dug It] The Banū ʿAbd al-Dār dug Umm Aḥrād. [Al-Sunbulah and Who Dug It] The Banū Jumaḥ dug al-Sunbulah, which is the well of Khalaf b. Wahb. [Al-Ghimr and Who Dug It] The Banū Sahm dug al-Ghimr, which is the well of the Banū Sahm. [Rumm, Khumm, and al-Ḥafr and Their Owners] There were wells dug outside Makkah in ancient times, from the era of Murrah b. Kaʿb and Kilāb b. Murrah and the early elders of the Quraysh, from which they drank. These are Rumm, and Rumm is the well of Murrah b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy; and Khumm, and Khumm is the well of the Banū Kilāb b. Murrah; and al-Ḥafr. Ḥudhayfah b. Ghānim, the brother of the Banū ʿAdī b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy, said: Ibn Hishām said: He is Abū Abī Jahm b. Ḥudhayfah: : And before that we lived for a long time, and we drew water only from Khumm or al-Ḥafr.
