Translation
✧ The Day of the Euphrates Abū ʿUbaydah said: Al-Muthannā b. Ḥārithah al-Shaybānī, who was the nephew of ʿImrān b. Murrah, raided Banū Taghlib while they were by the Euphrates, and that was shortly before Islam. He prevailed over them and killed those of their fighting men whom he took, and many of them drowned in the Euphrates. He seized their wealth and divided it among his companions. Their poet said concerning that: And among us is he who covered al-Dulaykah with his sword at a time when the Euphrates' battalions had grown weary. And among us is he who bound the well-rope to draw water and give to drink pure milk whose sides are not meager. And among us is the stranger of al-Shām, the like of whom has not been seen, a ransomer of a captive whose kinsmen have become far away. Al-Dulaykah is the horse of al-Muthannā b. Ḥārithah, and the one who bound the well-rope is Murrah b. Hammām, and the stranger of al-Shām is Ibn al-Qalūṣ b. al-Nuʿmān b. Thaʿlabah.
